Publication number: 20120032454Abstract: A latching system for and a method of latching a first member to a second member are provided. The latching system includes a latching mechanism including a displaceable feature which, when operatively displaced, allows a striker to engage with a housing of the latching mechanism, at a recess defined by the housing, to provide supplementary or auxiliary latching force. The displaceable feature may be displaced by an actuating load transmitted between the striker and the latching mechanism, where the actuating load is substantially greater than the nominal load experienced by the latching system during ordinary latching conditions. The engagement of the striker with the housing at the recess may transfer a portion of the actuating load to the housing during the event generating the actuating load, thereby increasing the latching strength of the latching system and reducing the potential for deformation or distortion of the latching element during the event.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 3, 2010Publication date: February 9, 2012Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS, INC.Inventors: Jeffrey L. Konchan, Louis J. Conrad

Publication number: 20110278864Abstract: A clip assembly for securing a latch rod includes a main body and a pivoting body rotatably coupled to the main body. The pivoting body is moveable between an open position allowing insertion of the latch rod relative to the clip assembly, and a closed position securing the latch rod relative to the clip assembly. A fastening mechanism is moveable between a fastened position securing the pivoting body relative to the main body and an un-fastened position allowing the rotational movement of the pivoting body relative to the main body. A biasing device is coupled to the main body and biases the pivoting body into the open position when the fastening mechanism is in the un-fastened position to visually and/or functionally indicate that the pivoting body is not fastened to the main body, and the latch rod is not properly secured within the clip assembly.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 12, 2010Publication date: November 17, 2011Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS, INC.Inventors: Jeffrey L. Konchan, Frank J. Arabia, JR., Lisa J. Dodson

Patent number: 5618069Abstract: The present invention generally includes a latch assembly including a completely symmetrical metal frame and a polymeric isolation plate mounted between the frame and levers. The polymeric isolation plate is not symmetrical but serves as a templet to assure that only the proper holes are being used on the metal frame for either right-hand or left-hand drive latch assemblies. The polymeric isolation plate also includes integral cylindrical bushings. Detent and fork-bolt levers are trapped onto the respective bushings by metal rivets so that the levers actually rotate on the low friction bushings and not on the metal rivets. The isolator plate includes an integral flange which is interposed between the striker of the vehicle and the throat of the frame to avoid rubbing metal-to-metal contact, to protect the throat, frame and striker and for quieter operation.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1995Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jeffrey L. Patent number: 5358301Abstract: According to the invention, a closure panel, such as a tailgate, is removably connected to a vehicle body for pivotal movement about a hinge axis. The panel may be removably lifted from the vehicle body when the panel is pivoted to a panel removal position. A torque rod counterbalance spring is carried by the panel and includes an elongated portion extending between a crank end anchored to the panel for pivotal movement therewith and a stationary end. A support device is anchored to the vehicle body and captures the stationary end of the torque rod to restrain its pivotal movement so that the torque rod is torsionally wound when the panel is pivoted away from the panel removal position to provide a counterbalance force for continuously urging the panel towards the panel removal position. The torque rod is completely unwound when the panel is pivoted to the panel removal position.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1993Date of Patent: October 25, 1994Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jeffrey L. Patent number: 5348357Abstract: A ratchet type vehicle closure latch is secured to a vehicle door by a pair of bolts. One is located in proximity to engaged teeth of a rotatable ratchet and pawl and the other is located in proximity to engaged portions of the ratchet and a striker. The closure latch has a plastic housing that includes a thin integral plastic sleeve that breaks away in service to provide a sleeve bearing that eliminates metal-on-metal contact between the rotatable ratchet and a ratchet stud. The ratchet stud and a pawl stud hold several parts of the door latch together. The door latch has several non-metallic parts and an insert molded ratchet for minimizing the metal-on-metal engagement, operational noise and lubrication requirements. Some parts are non-handed and other parts are identical to reduce manufacturing costs.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1992Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jeffrey L. Konchan, Alfred L. Portelli, Rita M. Paulik

Patent number: 5054827Abstract: The operating member of an uncoupling type vehicle door latch has a blocking portion which blocks movement of the coupling means to uncoupled position when the door latch is in unlatched position unless the operating member is first moved to an operated position. This requires the performance of multiple conscious actions by the driver in order to obtain keyless locking. The coupling means can be returned to coupled position by the locking means without operation of the operating member.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1990Date of Patent: October 8, 1991Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jeffrey L. Patent number: 4756563Abstract: A fork type bolt vehicle door latch includes a plastic housing which opens through one wall to receive the operating components of the latch in stacked relationship. A frame member closes the one open wall of the housing member. The operating levers of the latch are located adjacent the bottom thereof to permit the latch to be used in both front and rear door applications. The frame member and plastic housing are interconnected by intermediately flanged bushings which are internally threaded to receive mounting bolts for mounting the latch to a vehicle door. One of the bushings and the frame member trap the engaged shoulders of the bolt and detent therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1986Date of Patent: July 12, 1988Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Stephen K.
