  • Patent number: 7281316
Abstract: A magnetic structure, such as a pole tip, and method for forming the same includes forming a pole tip layer of magnetic material. A layer of polyimide precursor material is added above the pole tip layer and cured. A silicon-containing resist layer is added above the layer of polyimide precursor material and patterned. The resist layer is exposed to oxygen plasma for converting the resist into a glass-like material. Exposed portions of the cured polyimide precursor material are removed for exposing portions of the pole tip layer. The exposed portions of the pole tip layer are removed for forming a pole tip. Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) can then be performed to remove any unwanted material remaining above the pole tip.

  • Patent number: 7280313
Abstract: A a method for fabricating a structure, such as a magnetic head, having two coplanar metallic features of different compositions, both deposited on their own seed layers. The features may be made tall relative to their widths (ie. have a high aspect ratio), and are also very closely spaced. Only a single high-definition, critically aligned photolithographic procedure is used to create the critical structures, avoiding any problem with aligning features produced by multiple procedures. The method is applied to the production of the write structure of a magnetic read/write head, where a portion of the pole structure and the inductive coils are fabricated in the same plane with a close spacing and both having a vertical aspect ratio of more than about 2:1.

  • Patent number: 7259942
Abstract: In one illustrative example, a three terminal magnetic sensor (TTM) suitable for use in a magnetic head has a base region, a collector region, and an emitter region. A first barrier layer is located between the emitter region and the base region, and a second barrier layer is located between the collector region and the base region. A sensing plane is defined along sides of the base region, the collector region, and the emitter region. The base region has a free layer structure, a pinned layer structure adjacent the first barrier layer, and a non-magnetic spacer layer located between the free layer structure and the pinned layer structure. The collector region comprises an in-stack longitudinal biasing layer (LBL) structure which magnetically biases the free layer structure, where the second barrier layer serves as a non-magnetic spacer layer for the in-stacking biasing layer structure. In one variation, the layers are inverted such that the emitter region has the in-stack LBL structure.

  • Patent number: 7248434
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a pole tip structure for a magnetic head is provided. An etch stop layer is initially deposited after which a transfer layer is deposited. Further deposited is at least one masking layer. Reactive ion etching is then performed to define a trench in at least the transfer layer. A pole tip layer is then deposited in the trench to define a pole tip structure flanked at least in part by the transfer layer. A surface of the transfer layer or etch stop layer then remains in co-planar relationship with a surface of the pole tip structure.

  • Patent number: 7230799
Abstract: A system and method for controlling the position of a digital data storage device slider through the use of an electro-thermal micromechanical actuator is disclosed. A movable member is etched into a face of a slider opposite the air-bearing surface of the slider. The movable member is substantially freestanding in relation to the slider, having only a single end connected to the slider. An electrically actuated heater element with two parallel current paths is disposed on the movable member. One of the current paths is substantially narrower than the other current path. When a current is passed through the heater element, the narrower current path heats up more quickly than the wider current path. By varying the current passed through the heater element in a selected manner, a distortion of the movable member is harnessed and used to create a relative motion in the slider body, allowing the slider to be quickly and exactly located over the centerline of a track of a storage device.

  • Patent number: 7193817
Abstract: A magnetic head having a heat sink structure that is disposed proximate the induction coil to draw heat away from sensitive components of the head. The heat sink is fabricated above the second magnetic pole, and is therefore fabricated subsequent to the fabrication of the more delicate components of the magnetic head. In a preferred embodiment, the heat sink is fabricated photolithographically in the same process steps in which the electrical lead to the center tap of the induction coil is fabricated. The only difference in the magnetic head fabrication process is the modification of the photolithographic mask that is used to create the electroplating trench in which the electrical lead is electroplated, and the change to the mask involves the creation of a second opening within the mask for the creation of an electroplating trench at the location of the heat sink.

  • Patent number: 7133255
Abstract: A magnetic head having a magnetic pole that includes a pole tip and a yoke. The pole tip includes an elongated neck, having an anchor piece on one end and a yoke interconnection piece on the other end. The air bearing surface of the head is located approximately at the midpoint of the elongated neck, and shadowing effects of the end pieces during the ion milling notching process do not create significant variations in the width of the neck at locations near the midpoint of the neck. As a result, variations of the pole tip width at the ABS of fabricated magnetic heads is significantly reduced, and processing yield is therefore increased. The yoke is engaged to the pole tip at a location along the neck that is close to the air bearing surface. In a preferred embodiment, the yoke interconnect piece is encapsulated within the yoke.

  • Patent number: 7117583
Abstract: A method and apparatus using a pre-patterned seed layer for providing an aligned coil for an inductive head structure. The method uses an aligned process where the base plate imprint is fabricated on an electrically insulating layer and the reversed image is fabricated and etched into the coil insulation material, e.g., hard bake photoresist to alleviate the problems associated with complete ion removal of the seed layer between high aspect ratio coils. The method would also not be prone to plating non-uniformities (voids), and would not be subject to seed layer undercutting in a wet etch step process.
