  • Patent number: 6334254
Abstract: In order to ergonomically induce relative sliding between a base and a cover member wherein the base is slidably mounted on the base and wherein the two members go to make a wide blade scraper body, a cam bearing wheel is mounted on the base and arranged to operatively engage a cam following feature which is formed on the cover. Rotation of the cam wheel which projects out of the sides of the handle portion with the thumb or the like, induces the cover to move relative to the base. As the relative movement proceeds a wide blade which is mounted at the leading edge of the scraper is released from a clamped constantly exposed position and is rendered changeable.

  • Patent number: 6263577
Abstract: To automatically retract the blade after cutting, a flat serpentine spring is integrally formed with a thumb piece which is slidably received in a slot formed along the upper edge of a housing/handle. The housing has a finger rest projection on the lower edge to facilitate cutting while the blade is projected with the thumb. The two halves of the housing snap together using a block-like projection formed on one half, and a pair of tabs formed on the other. The tabs, which are resilient, slide along the sides of the projection until recesses on each of the side of the projection are reached. Inwardly extending ridges on the ends of the tabs enter the recesses to provide a click lock. An aperture between the tabs allows pressure to be applied to the top of the projection to separate the two halves for blade reset/re-adjustment. The blade carrier, which is adapted to support two different types of blades, is slidably mounted in the housing so that it and the thumb piece are free of detents or click-locks.

  • Patent number: 6223439
Abstract: In order to permit two halves of a hand tool to be quickly separated and then reconnected following an operation such as gaining access to, storing or exchanging a cutting blade, tool or the like, a connector is arranged to require rotation only through about 90° to achieve disconnection/connection. The connector has an engagement/locking feature which can pass through an elongate/shaped opening on one of the two halves, and then be prevented from passing back therethrough when the rotational angle of the connector is changed with respect to the opening and rotates the engaging/locking feature into engagement with an external surface surrounding the elongate/shaped opening.

  • Patent number: 6026575
Abstract: A utility knife handle including a first body, or first shell, adjustably mated to a second body, or second shell, to form a blade holding portion and a blade storing portion. The first and second bodies have mating beveled surfaces adapted to align the first body with the second body when they are joined. In the preferred embodiment the first body is connected to the second body by a control knob adapted to allow for linear and pivotal adjustment between the first and second bodies. The utility knife handle is adjustable between an open position in which the holding portion and the storing portion allow the removal of any blades therein, an intermediate position in which the holding portion prevents removal of any blades therein and allows for positional adjustment of blades therein and the storing portion prevents the removal of any blades therein, and a closed position in which the holding portion prevents movement of any blades therein and the storing portion prevents the removal of any blades therein.

  • Patent number: 5903978
Abstract: A razor caddy receives a razor handle suitable for supporting a razor cartridge. The top and bottom handle surfaces have a continuous index finger profile when gripped on the top surface of the razor handle. The razor handle has a widened portion proximate to a proximate end, and side portions of the razor handle form a concave profile between the proximate end and the distal end. The side portions also form a widened portion at the distal end. The index finger profile of the razor handle defines a detail and a normal shaving position structure in combination with the handle top and bottom surface. First and second elastomeric gripping portions are each positioned on the bottom of the handle. The detail shaving position is achieved by the first gripping portion having a defined thumb engaging area proximate to the proximate end, with the elastomeric material defining correct thumb placement. The second gripping area is positioned near the distal end of the handle.

  • Patent number: 5674234
Abstract: A flexible surgical razor for removing organic tissue, such as lesions, moles, corns and the like, at or below the skin's surface. The surgical razor utilizes a flexible blade with a well-honed front edge and left and right gripping extensions formed attached to the left and right side edges of the blade, respectively. Each gripping extension includes an inner segment extending in the same plane as the blade, a middle segment extending at an upward angle away from the plane of the blade, and an exterior segment, with exterior gripping edges, extending at an intersecting angle with the middle segment. The gripping edges include a plurality of teeth in rows asymmetrically angled to the plane of the flexible blade for full and complete control of blade flexing. A flexible sheath is added to regulate the shape and extent of the blade's curvature. The user applies inward finger pressure to both gripping extensions simultaneously which bends the flexible blade in a curved fashion.
