Publication number: 20150229237Abstract: An embodiment provides a band, including: an energy harvesting mechanism that stores energy in response to deformation of the band; a device; and a connection coupling the stored energy of the band to the device. In an embodiment, a force is applied to deform a deformable band along a length dimension of the deformable band. The force acts to move an energy harvesting mechanism of the deformable band such that the energy harvesting mechanism transforms deformation of the deformable band into stored energy. The stored energy may be used, e.g., to collect information using a sensor of said deformable band. Other aspects are described and claimed.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 12, 2014Publication date: August 13, 2015Applicant: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.Inventors: Mark Charles Davis, Jennifer Greenwood Zawacki, Debra Kay Kobs-Fortner, Douglas Warren Robinson

Patent number: 9104311Abstract: Fingertip-sized discrete areas are provided on a slate computer and have different tactile characteristics than the remainder of the surface on which they are disposed. The discrete areas are arranged to mimic home keys of a keyboard and each discrete area corresponds to a respective home key. In this way, a user is given tactile feedback of when fingers are properly placed in the home position, with home key finger placement triggering the presentation of a full keyboard on screen. Other embodiments do not use tactilely distinct keys, with simultaneous placement of two or more fingers on the computer triggering display of the virtual keyboard.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2008Date of Patent: August 11, 2015Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.Inventors: Justin Tyler Dubs, Howard Jeffrey Locker, QianYing Wang, Jennifer Greenwood Zawacki

Patent number: 9024975Abstract: A system, method, and program product is provided that automatically allocates a display screen into two areas when the display screen is pivoted from a landscape orientation to a portrait orientation. A hypervisor receives a pivot request (e.g., from a user) to pivot the display screen from a landscape orientation to a portrait orientation. When the display screen is oriented in the landscape orientation, a primary operating system displays its data on the display screen. Upon reception of the pivot request, the hypervisor allocates the display screen into a primary display area and a secondary display area. The hypervisor then displays data originating from the primary operating system in the primary display area and displays data originating from a second operating system in the secondary display area.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2008Date of Patent: May 5, 2015Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Patent number: 9019088Abstract: The subject disclosure is directed towards a technology by which a device includes one or more haptic feedback mechanisms that may be operated in a controlled manner to output amplitude-controlled vibrations. In one aspect, the vibrations from at least two haptic feedback mechanisms are combined, providing different amplitudes at different device locations. In one aspect, a haptic feedback mechanism outputs vibrations with a one amplitude in one state, and another, different amplitude in at least one other state, as controlled by the controller. The different states may correspond to different weights being driven at different times, and/or different positions of one or more weights.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2012Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Patent number: 8812699Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for synchronizing inbound and outbound data in an environment that offers multiple data pathways. When an attempt to send data by a host computer fails, the host computer notifies a secondary device with a separate network connection of the failure. The secondary device attempts to send the data over its separate network connection. If the secondary device fails to send the data, the host computer generates new attempts to send the data over its network connection. The secondary device does the same if the host computer continues to fail in its attempts to send the data. When either the host computer or the secondary device sends the outbound data, it notifies the other of the successful send. The devices then stop further attempts to transmit the data. For inbound data, the host computer and secondary device obtain unique identifiers for inbound data items, compare them, and request from the other those inbound data items that it has not received.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2008Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) PTE.
