  • Patent number: 9973942
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for modifying network management for hybrid operation. In one embodiment, the networks include an LTE network and a CDMA 1× network, and a mobile device can place CDMA 1× voice calls while registered with the LTE network. However, since the mobile device cannot simultaneously measure information for the LTE network while connected to the CDMA 1× networks, the mobile device modifies measurements and behaviors reported to the LTE network. In one implementation, the mobile device accounts for the time switched away from the LTE network in one or more subsequent reports thereto.

  • Patent number: 9967731
Abstract: Embodiments relate to a User Equipment (UE) device and associated method performing improved data roaming with reduced cost. The UE may comprise at least one radio, one or more processors, a first SIM entity and a second SIM entity. The first SIM entity may be configured to implement subscriber identity module (SIM) functionality for a subscribed voice and/or data plan of a first carrier. The second SIM entity may be configured to facilitate dynamic subscription to a local data plan of a second carrier when the UE is data roaming outside of a network of the first carrier. As one example, the UE, using the second SIM entity, may be configured to dynamically subscribe to a pay-as-you-go data plan of a second carrier, to which the user is not subscribed, when the user is data roaming outside of the first carrier's network.

  • Patent number: 9961599
Abstract: A method to control multiple radio access bearers is performed at a mobile wireless communication device when the mobile wireless communication device is connected to a radio network subsystem in a wireless communication network by first and second bidirectional radio access bearers. The mobile wireless communication device transmits a data packet on an uplink of the first bidirectional radio access bearer to the radio network subsystem. When the data packet is not correctly received by the radio network subsystem, the mobile wireless communication device retransmits the data packet repeatedly. After N retransmissions of the data packet, the mobile wireless communication device releases the first bidirectional radio access bearer while maintaining the second bidirectional radio access bearer. The first bidirectional radio access bearer provides a channel to transport packet switched data, and the second bidirectional radio access bearer provides a channel to transport circuit switched data.

  • Patent number: 9942873
Abstract: Performing concurrent data communication and voice call monitoring using a single cellular radio. According to some embodiments, the UE may perform data communication, via the radio, using a first RAT, supported by a first SIM. The UE may also perform paging functions for a voice communication, via the radio, using a second RAT, supported by a second SIM. In some scenarios, the first and second RATs are the same. The data communication and the paging functions may be performed concurrently using shared physical layer resources. For example, the shared physical layer resources may comprise a shared software defined radio (SDR) configured to demodulate and/or decode signals of the data communication and the paging function. As another example, the shared physical layer resources may comprise a shared Rake receiver configured to demodulate signals of the data communication and the paging function.

  • Publication number: 20180092007
Abstract: According to techniques described herein, a UE (which may be link budget limited) may be connected to a network using a first RAT. The UE may be configured to determine a first resource requirement for communication on the network using the first RAT and a second resource requirement for communication on the network using a second RAT. The UE may be further configured to trigger a re-selection to the second RAT in response to the UE determining that the second RAT is preferred over the first RAT based, at least in part, on a comparison of the first and second resource requirements.

  • Publication number: 20180063751
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods for user equipment (UE) devices to perform more efficient frequency scans for potential base stations. According to techniques described herein, the UE may determine that it does not have cellular service and determine first information based on a last camped cell. A time period during which the first information was acquired may be determined and one or more frequency scans may be performed. The frequency scans may be limited to a set of frequencies based in part on the time period. Thus, if the time period is less than a first value, the set of frequencies may include a first set of frequencies and if the time period is greater than the first value but less than a second value, the set of frequencies may include the first set of frequencies and a second set of frequencies.

  • Patent number: 9848026
Abstract: An interface circuit in a computing device may communicate with user-interface devices using shared slots during time intervals. In particular, the computing device may transmit outgoing messages to the user-interface devices at a first predefined time during sequential time intervals when the user-interface devices transition from a sleep mode to a normal mode. In response, the computing device may receive incoming messages from one or more of the user-interface devices at a second predefined time following the first predefined time during the sequential time intervals. Then, the computing device may transmit a multicast message to the user-interface devices at a third predefined time during the sequential time intervals. In response to the given multicast message, one of the user-interface devices may communicate data to the computing device. Note that, in some instances, a multicast time slot may instead be used to communicate data to one of the user-interface devices.

  • Patent number: 9794832
Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus are described for managing a device in a mixed wireless communication system. A device may decide to scan or not scan for a cell based on (or at least on) updating information. The updating information may be used together or individually. The updating information may be maintaining a time window in conjunction with a device's motion status, maintaining a list that tracks cell identity in areas of non-service, or utilizing network deployment information.

  • Patent number: 9794403
Abstract: Performing data communications by a Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) user equipment (UE), while simultaneously conducting two concurrent voice calls. The UE may receive a request to perform data communications while conducting a first voice call on a first radio and concurrently conducting a second voice call on a second radio. The UE may then determine whether one of the voice calls is currently on hold. The UE may perform the data communications using the radio on which the held call is being conducted. The UE may therefore dynamically select available slots from the first radio and the second radio for performing the data communication, based on which of the first radio and the second radio has a voice call that is currently on hold. In some embodiments, the data communications may be performed using a Long Term Evolution (LTE) protocol stack.

  • Patent number: 9781737
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for minimizing scheduling collisions between networks. In one embodiment, the networks are substantially unsynchronized, and during hybrid network operation (e.g., LTE and CDMA 1X operation), a mobile device can place CDMA 1X voice calls while registered with the LTE network. However, since the LTE and CDMA 1X networks are not coordinated, the mobile device will experience scheduling collisions. In one variant, the LTE network accounts for predictable behaviors (such as CDMA 1X paging), and schedules low priority tasks during likely time interval conflicts. Consequently, even though the mobile device must tune away from the LTE network to check CDMA 1X pages, overall LTE network performance is minimally affected.

  • Patent number: 9681450
Abstract: A method for radio link control in a mobile wireless communication device. The mobile wireless device transmits a sequence of service requests to establish radio resources with a wireless communication network for a data packet in a pending data buffer. When no radio resources are allocated in response to the transmitted sequence of service requests, the mobile wireless device sets a minimum threshold for the pending data buffer, discards all pending data packets above the minimum threshold and discards the oldest pending data packet. The mobile wireless device repeats transmitting and discarding until a radio resource is allocated or the pending data packet buffer is empty. A retry interval between successive service requests is increased after transmitting each sequence of service requests until reaching a maximum retry interval value.
