    Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatuses a data transmission and a radio access network based notification area update (RNAU) procedure of a user equipment (UE) in a radio resource control (RRC) inactive state. According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a method includes: entering a RRC inactive state of a UE based on RRC configuration information; starting a timer for RNAU procedure; transmitting small data at the RRC inactive state of the UE; and in response to receiving response information corresponding to the transmitted small data, restarting the timer for RNAU procedure. The method further includes that the timer for RNAU procedure expires after the UE has triggered the small data transmission procedure. The UE may suspend the RNAU procedure. The UE may cancel or resume the RNAU procedure depending on the small data transmission procedure.
