  • Patent number: 5430134
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for producing lipids containing the fatty acid petroselinic acid in plants. The production of petroselinic acid is accomplished by genetically transforming plants which do not normally accumulate petroselinic acid with a gene for a .omega.12 desaturase from another species which does normally accumulate petroselinic acid.

Inventors: John B. Ohlrogge, Edgar B. Cahoon, John Shanklin, Christopher R. Somerville
  • Patent number: 4888282
Abstract: A synthetic gene which encodes for acyl carrier protein (ACP) has been designed. Construction, cloning, and expression in E. coli of spinach ACP-I has been demonstrated. In vitro production of ACP by appropriate expression vectors carrying the synthetic gene will augment the meager supply of this protein. Analogous genes designed for expression of ACP in plants would be a useful tool for controlling fatty acid synthesis and metabolism.
