  • Publication number: 20140178881
Abstract: This invention relates to the identification of modified cytosine residues, such as 5-methylcytosine (5mC), 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) and 5-formylcytosine (5fC) to be distinguished from cytosine (C) in a sample nucleotide sequence. Methods may comprise oxidising or reducing a first portion of polynucleotides which comprise the sample nucleotide sequence; treating the oxidised or reduced first portion and a second portion of polynucleotides with bisulfite; sequencing the polynucleotides in the first and second portions of the population following steps ii) and iii) to produce first and second nucleotide sequences, respectively and; identifying the residue in the first and second nucleotide sequences which corresponds to a cytosine residue in the sample nucleotide sequence. These methods may be useful, for example in the analysis of genomic DNA and/or of RNA.

  • Patent number: 8649686
Abstract: In a communication device using a plurality of signal enhancement mechanisms, a system and method are provided for managing signal processing power consumption. A receiver accepts a communications signal and analyzes signal integrity. In response to analyzing the signal integrity, a signal enhancement mechanism is changed, and device power consumption is modified in response to changing the signal enhancement mechanism. In one aspect, the receiver changes a receiver signal enhancement mechanism, and modifies its power consumption. For example, one or more of the following receiver signal enhancement mechanisms may be selected: forward error correction (FEC), equalization, dc voltage level, and physical coding sublayer (PCS).

  • Patent number: 8375201
Abstract: A system and method are provided for securing links at the physical (PHY) layer in an IEEE 802.3 Ethernet communication system. A local device (LD) receives an electrical waveform representing link partner security information from a network-connected link partner (LP) via unformatted message pages. The LD accesses predetermined LP reference information stored in a tangible memory medium. The LD compares the received LP security information to the LP reference information. In response to the LD matching the received LP security information to the LP reference information, a secure link to the LP is verified. Likewise, the LD may send electrical waveforms representing security information to the LP via the unformatted message pages. In response to the LP matching the LD security information to the LD reference information, a secure link to the LD is verified.

  • Patent number: 8255779
Abstract: A system and method are provided for accelerating forward error correction (FEC) synchronization in a communicating receiver. On the transmitter side, the method accepts an energy waveform representing a packet of data symbols, encodes the packet, and creates an FEC block. Prior to transmitting the FEC block, an electromagnetic waveform is transmitted representing an FEC flag character. Then, an electromagnetic waveform representing the FEC block is transmitted a predetermined first period of time after the transmission of the FEC flag character. For example, the first time period may be immediately following the FEC flag character transmission or a predetermined number of idle characters following the transmission of the FEC flag character.

  • Patent number: 8210631
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for printing a media sheet in a media processing device. The method includes aligning a first portion of a printhead of the media processing device to a print area of the media sheet. The method further includes printing the print area of the media sheet by traversing the printhead over the print area in a first direction. The printing is performed by the first portion. Further, the method includes aligning a second portion of the printhead to the print area by adjusting the media sheet relative to the printhead by an index distance in a direction perpendicular to the first direction. Thereafter, the method includes reprinting the print area by traversing the printhead over the print area in a second direction opposite to the first direction. The reprinting is performed by the second portion.

  • Patent number: 7957598
Abstract: A method for compressing data includes transmitting a requested compression factor such as a quality factor known in JPEG compression, to a scanner or like peripheral device. The type of communication link between the scanner or like device and a host computer is identified, and based on the communication link type, the requested compression factor is altered to generate a new compression factor subsequently used to compress the data. The amount of buffer, such as scan buffer, used by the scanner or peripheral device may also be used to alter the compression factor prior to compression.
