  • Patent number: 4949772
Abstract: A roll-up door for a contained body of a van or the like is provided with a winch which is located in a compartment formed in the header of the door. The winch is connected by flexible winding straps to the upper door panel and the lower door panel so that it is operable to drive the door between the open and closed position. The door panels are hingedly connected by hinges in which the hinge pin is located at the inner face of the door. Flexible sealing members are connected to each jamb and bear against a marginal edge portion of the outer face of the door when the door is in the closed position. A control system for controlling the direction of rotation of the reversible D.C. motor is provided which includes a master control circuit and a slave control circuit which is selectively operable.

  • Patent number: 4905169
Abstract: An apparatus and method simultaneously measures a plurality of spectral wavelengths present in electromagnetic radiation. A modulatable birefringent optical element is employed to divide a polarized light beam into two components, thereby producing a phase difference in two resulting light beams such that the two beams can be made to interfere with one another when recombined, the interference pattern providing the wavelength information required for the analysis of the incident light. The interferometer thus created performs in a similar manner to a Michelson interferometer, but with no moving parts, and with a resolution dependent on the degree of phase shift introduced by the modulator.

  • Patent number: 4887721
Abstract: Method and apparatus for sorting particles, such as biological particles. A first laser defines an optical path having an intensity gradient which is effective to propel the particles along the path but which is sufficiently weak that the particles are not trapped in an axial direction. A probe laser beam interrogates the particles to identify predetermined phenotypical characteristics of the particles. A second laser beam intersects the driving first laser beam, wherein the second laser beam is activated by an output signal indicative of a predetermined characteristic. The second laser beam is switchable between a first intensity and a second intensity, where the first intensity is effective to displace selected particles from the driving laser beam and the second intensity is effective to propel selected particles along the deflection laser beam. The selected particles may then be propelled by the deflection beam to a location effective for further analysis.

  • Patent number: 4865079
Abstract: A high pressure hydraulic flow control valve is formed with a spool which is capable of operating as a conventional spool to control the flow of fluid from an input port to an output port or to a return port. The spool also provides overload protection which will permit fluid to pass from the input port directly to the return port when an overload pressure condition exists in the fluid supply line. In alternative structure, the overload pressure release system may be incorporated into the valve which is used to control the return of fluid from the output port to the return passage. The high pressure hydraulic flow control valve is formed from a die-cast housing and has hardened seats mounted in access passages so as to bear against a seating shoulder. Preferably, a retaining sleeve is mounted in the access passage to bear against the hardened seat to retain it against the seating shoulder.

  • Patent number: 4856738
Abstract: An adjustable seating system for a vehicle, particularly an aircraft, providing means for readily adapting the seating layout in an aircraft cabin to vary passenger density where a plurality of seating units are mounted upon a pair of longitudinal seat rails. Each seating unit incorporates a seat adjustment and locking system comprising a pair of interconnected sprocket wheels arranged to be in driving engagement with a related one of the seat rails so that the seating units can be moved to selected locations without physical separation from the track. Sprocket locking means, when engaged, restrains the seat against horizontal movement and reacts induced fore and aft flight loads obviating the need for separate seat rail engaging restraint means.

  • Patent number: 4573796
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to an apparatus for eliminating background interference during fluorescence measurements in a multiple laser flow cytometer. A biological particle stained with fluorescent dyes is excited by a laser. A fluorescence detector detects the fluorescence. The particle scatters light and a gate signal is generated and delayed until the biological particle reaches the next laser. The delayed signal turns on this next laser, which excites a different stained component of the same biological particle.
