    Abstract: Embodiments herein advantageously reduce the amount of control signalling and header information that must accompany an application layer message when transporting that message from a wireless device to a supporting application server via an intermediate node. To do so, the wireless device prepares a single radio block that includes the application layer message and an indication that the single radio block contains the entire application layer message. The device then sends a control message to the intermediate node that requests allocation of radio resources for sending the single radio block without establishing a temporary block flow (TBF). The device finally sends the single radio block using the allocated resources, without a TBF. Upon receiving the block, the intermediate node determines, based on the indication within the block, whether or not the block contains an entire application layer message. If so, the intermediate node forwards that application layer message towards the application server.

Upon arrival of the MS in the target cell, the MS transmits an uplink sequence number status message to the target base station providing a downlink sequence number status for the packet flow, and starts uplink data transmission to the target base station beginning with the next expected uplink packet.

    Abstract: A wireless communication network having received-priority access requests on an access channel issues an implicit reject response on a grant channel, such as a flag or other value embedded in an explicit access grant or explicit access reject response. The implicit reject response applies to some or all outstanding low-priority access requests. At the expiration of a terminal's grant channel monitoring window, if it has detected an applicable implicit reject response but not an explicit response, the terminal will refrain from transmitting another access request for a predetermined or configurable duration. The implicit reject response may comprise a flag, or a value that implicitly rejects only a fraction of the outstanding low-priority access requests. The implicit reject response may comprise a duration that the terminal must wait prior to transmitting another access request, and may direct the terminal to directly monitor the grant channel without transmitting a subsequent access request.

    Abstract: Two User Equipment (UE) operate in a Near Companion Mode (NCM), in which a monitoring UE (MUE) monitors an uplink transmission opportunity granted to its companion UE (CUE) on a shared uplink channel. If the CUE does not begin transmitting within a predetermined portion of its transmission opportunity, the MUE may utilize the transmission opportunity to transmit an uplink data packet. In one embodiment, where the CUE does not have data to transmit, it may transmit a predetermined pattern at the beginning of its transmission opportunity, to indicate to the MUE that the transmission opportunity is available. The MUE may transmit an NCM radio block using the entire symbol space associated with the last three of four bursts allocated to the CUE, or using a newly defined NCM format comprising four abbreviated bursts, using only a portion of the symbol space associated with the four bursts corresponding to the transmission opportunity allocated to the CUE.

    Abstract: The present invention is a method and system adapted to facilitate, between a mobile station (MS) and network, an indication of support for reduced time transmission interval (RTTI). The MS can provide a base station system (BSS) with an indication of its multislot capability within an access burst sent at the start of a contention based access. In another aspect, the MS can indicate support for a new Immediate Assignment message as the conventional Immediate Assignment message can only assign single timeslots. The present invention enables the Radio Access Network (RAN) to assign RTTI and more than one timeslot for GPRS/EDGE temporary block flows (TBFs) during an Access Grant Channel (AGCH) assignment. The method of the present invention can be implemented in a computer program product or distributed software adapted to be loaded into at least one or a plurality of memory locations and executed by at least one or a plurality of respective computer processors.

The BSS places in an MCS-1 radio block, a CS-1 RLC/MAC control block identical to a coding scheme CS-1 RLC/MAC control message excluding the MAC header octet. The BSS also places a coding scheme CS-4 stealing bit code word in the radio block using legacy stealing bit values and positions. The CPS field (26) of the block header (25) indicates that the radio block contains a CS-1 RLC/MAC control message. The MS receives the radio block and detects the coding scheme CS-4 stealing bit code word. In response, the MS interprets the received radio block header to identify the CPS field. The MS determines from the CPS field that a CS-1 RLC/MAC control block has been received.

    Abstract: An intermediate node in a wireless communication system transmits application layer messages between first and second nodes. To do so, the intermediate node receives a request to activate a packet data protocol (PDP) context for the first node. The request, as generated by the first node, indicates the first node is capable of using a first protocol stack that excludes one or more particular layers included in a second protocol stack used by the second node. The intermediate node activates a PDP context for the first node in accordance with the request. The intermediate node thereafter forwards application layer messages supported by the activated PDP context between the first node and the second node, forwarding application layer messages destined for the first node in accordance with the first protocol stack and forwarding application layer messages destined for the second node in accordance with the second protocol stack.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for interrupting the lower priority packet transmission/reception for higher priority packer transmission reception within the context of a common RLC entity is provided herein. The transmission/reception of lower priority data blocks containing data segments of a first higher layer packet is interrupted to transmit/receive higher priority data blocks containing data segments of a second higher layer packet. After the transmission/reception of a final segment of the second higher layer packet, the transmission/reception of the first higher layer packet is resumed. In some embodiments, a final segment of the second higher layer packet is encapsulated in a final higher priority data block with a remaining data segment of the first higher layer packet. The final higher priority data block further includes a transition indicator to indicate a transition from the second higher layer packet back to the first higher layer packet.
