  • Publication number: 20020085537
Abstract: A communication network comprises a broadcast teleservice message center generating broadcast teleservice messages. The broadcast teleservice message center is connected to a circuit-switched network over an interface that uses a first messaging protocol. The broadcast teleservice message center includes an interworking function to connect the broadcast teleservice message center to a packet-switched network over an interface that uses a second messaging protocol. Broadcast teleservice messages transmitted over said first interface to mobile terminals having service with the said circuit-switched network are converted by the interworking function to a format specified by the second messaging protocol for delivery over the packet-switched network to mobile terminals having service with the packet-switched network.

  • Publication number: 20020072376
Abstract: A system determines a position of a mobile terminal tuned to a first control channel. The system sends a paging request to the mobile terminal via the first control channel. The paging request indicates that the mobile terminal is to switch to a second control channel. The system also receives a paging response from the mobile terminal via the second control channel and determines the position of the mobile terminal based on the paging response.

  • Publication number: 20010019542
Abstract: A method is disclosed for improving the efficiency of the packet data channel by providing means for interrupting transmissions from or to a first mobile station so as to allow a short message to be communicated between the communication system and a different mobile station. The packet channel feedback information includes several flags: Received/Not Received (R/N); Partial Echo (PE); and Partial Echo Qualifier (PEQ). The PEQ allows the communication system to interrupt the transmission to one mobile station to send a short message to another mobile station. By setting the PEQ to various values, a mobile station can determine whether subchannel ownership has been temporarily interrupted and reassigned to another station.

  • Patent number: 6175557
Abstract: A method for transmitting messages using an efficient communications link protocol over an air interface of a cellular communications system is disclosed. A frame in the protocol is divided into a plurality of sections including a header section and a data section. The header section contains a field which indicates what type of information is contained in the frame.

  • Patent number: 6157845
Abstract: A method and device are provided for of supporting a plurality of mobile station operation modes in a wireless communication system by user control. Presently, communication protocols exist for supporting end user equipment which operates in a single mode of operation. However, it is desirable to combine protocols from various technologies to form end user equipment which operates in multiple modes of operation. Thereby, the present method allows the mobile station to operate in a multi-mode environment where a user can invoke a certain mode.

  • Patent number: 6091960
Abstract: A method for paging mobile stations in a communication system with a packet data control channel which is subdivided into master slots and slave slots is disclosed. First, each mobile station is assigned a paging slot, wherein the paging slot is a master slot. The system then pages one of the mobile stations on the paging slot assigned to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6073005
Abstract: The handling of emergency calls, e.g., 911 calls, should be performed on an expedited basis. In radiocommunication systems, knowledge by the mobile unit that an emergency call is being placed can be used to expedite and optimize emergency call handling. Various techniques are described herein to identify emergency calls when placed by a mobile user. Moreover, the provision of auxiliary alarm functions for the mobile unit are also described.

  • Patent number: 6028854
Abstract: Variances in bandwidth used by a radiocommunication connection are adapted to by changing the type of information being transmitted. For example, in a TDMA environment, a first downlink time slot associated with a double- or triple-rate connection may have a first format, while a second time slot associated with the same connection may have a second format different from the first format. Additional bits in the second (or third) time slot can be used to carry payload information which is not required to be transmitted at greater than full-rate. Moreover, FACCH information need only be transmitted in the master channel.

  • Patent number: 6016428
Abstract: A method and device are provided for storing and maintaining parameters associated with activities relating to a first channel while a mobile station is camped on or uses a second channel. More specifically, when a parameter indicates that activities are to be executed, the mobile station returns to the first channel to execute the actions associated with the parameter. For instance, parameters associated with a DCCH may be stored when the mobile station moves from the DCCH to a packet data channel (PDCH). When a parameter indicates that activities are to be executed, the mobile station may then return to the DCCH from the PDCH and execute the actions associated with the parameter. Since the mobile station returns to the DCCH for the actions rather than staying on the PDCH, the mobile station is activated from a system perspective, on both channels.

Bandwidth in the second (or third) time slot can be used to carry information in a fast out-of-band channel (FOC). The FOC may provide information relating to the same connection as the payload or data field in that time slot, e.g., a service type identifier which informs the mobile or base station of the type of information (e.g., voice, video or data) being conveyed in the payload. Alternatively, the FOC information may be associated with a connection or connections which are different from that supported by the payload or data field containing the FOC.

  • Patent number: 5835860
Abstract: Methods for operating and administering mobile station user groups in a wireless communications system. In one embodiment, a user group identification code is assigned to a plurality of mobile stations to form a user group, wherein the number of mobile stations in the user group is less than the total number of mobile stations in the entire communications system, and wherein the user group identification code is distinguishable from a unique mobile station identification code associated with each mobile station in the user group. A page message from the system to the user group is transmitted using the user group identification code when a terminating call to the user group is requested. A user group specific page indication is then generated at the mobile stations indicating to a user of each mobile station that the page message has been received. A page response message is then transmitted to the system from mobile stations whose users acknowledge the page indication.

  • Patent number: 5806007
Abstract: A method and device are provided for controlling an activity mode of a mobile station after the system has originated or terminated a transaction with the mobile station. The activity mode corresponds to whether the mobile station stays "awake" or goes into a sleep mode, which must be made known to the system. If the mobile station does not immediately go to the sleep mode, the base station can expect the mobile station to be reading all slots. If the mobile station is in the sleep mode, the mobile station only reads its assigned paging slots. The mobile station may not go to the sleep mode until a selected amount of activity time has expired; during the activity time, the mobile station continues to read all slots. As a result, the mobile station can immediately receive packets, thereby saving set-up time which increases the response time of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 5768267
Abstract: A method for registering a mobile station when the mobile station first enters a communication system which supports packet data channels is disclosed. The mobile station receives system information broadcasted on a digital control channel. The mobile station is then assigned to a beacon packet data channel over which the mobile station registers with the communication system.

  • Patent number: 5729531
Abstract: A method for reassigning mobile stations a new phase within a channel is disclosed. In a communication system, a plurality of mobile stations attempt to communicate on a limited number of channels. The invention first uses a general allocation method to approximately evenly distribute the mobile stations on the available channels. After a mobile station begins active communication on the system, a second allocation method is used to change the phase of some mobile stations on a channel which has become heavily loaded. In addition, a message can also be sent to mobile stations assigned to but not yet actively communicating on the heavily loaded channel indicating that the mobile stations should change to a new channel.

  • Patent number: 5610917
Abstract: A method for transmitting messages between mobile stations and a cellular switching system is disclosed which improves channel burst capacity by allowing information from two distinct layer 3 messages to be transmitted in a unique layer 2 frame carried within a channel burst. The end of a first layer 3 message and the beginning of a second layer 3 message is identified in an end of message field which is used to delimit the layer 3 message information contained in a subsequent data field.
