Patent number: 10749168Abstract: An electrochemical cell or battery uses iron gall ink as an electrolyte. In some examples, mold, bacteria, or yeast are allowed to grow on the electrolyte. The ink is made by combining tannic or gallic acid from a material such as dehydrated tea with a metal or transition metal sulfate, such as iron sulfate, potassium sulfate, or manganese sulfate. Urea, a metal or transition metal salt, and glycerin can also be added to the electrolyte to assist in the ion-producing reaction. One example includes electrodes made from iron and graphite, and an electrolyte of iron-gall or iron-tannate ink. Another example uses a manganese based ink. Aluminum, potassium, or sodium tannate ink, urea, and graphite can be used to make a metal-air cell, in which the cell is open to the air. The ink can be used as a charge transport in a redox-flow electrochemical cell. Yet another example utilizes Bauxite residue, a waste product of aluminum manufacture.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2018Date of Patent: August 18, 2020Inventors: Michael E. Johnson, John Guthrie

Publication number: 20140172720Abstract: Method and systems for facilitating digital commerce are provided. Systems include a client and server which are incorporated into an online purchasing system to perform the purchase and online delivery of electronic content. The client includes a secured copy of the merchandise and components used to license and purchase the merchandise and to unsecure and process the licensed merchandise. The client communicates with the server to download the components onto a customer's computer system and to license and purchase a requested item of merchandise. The server supplies merchandise-specific components and licenses the requested item of merchandise by generating an electronic certificate. The electronic certificate contains license parameters that are specific to the requested merchandise and an indicated purchasing option. Once an electronic license certificate is received, the merchandise is made available to the customer for use in accordance with the licensing parameters.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 11, 2013Publication date: June 19, 2014Inventors: Ganapathy Krishnan, John Guthrie, Scott Oyler

Publication number: 20050114402Abstract: A block level data snapshot system uses agents to convert block level file commands from devices such as computer workstations intended for block level devices such as hard disks. The block level file commands are converted into instructions for a node based snapshot data system for taking snapshots at the block level. By converting the block level file commands into instructions suitable for the node based snapshot system, snapshots are able to be taken at the block level, which allows for disk storage savings and speed enhancements. One resultant feature is that the block level data snapshot system can be used as a block level storage device for one or more workstations thus allowing relatively simple integration of a snapshot system with existing workstations.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 20, 2003Publication date: May 26, 2005Applicant: Zetta Systems, Inc.Inventor: John Guthrie

Publication number: 20050010592Abstract: A method and system for creating a snapshot of data. The snapshot system creates a snapshot of data that is hierarchically organized, such as the data of a file system. When a snapshot is to be created, the snapshot system copies the root node of the hierarchical organization to a new root node that points to the same child nodes as the copied root node. This new root node becomes the root node of the snapshot data. When a current node is subsequently modified, the snapshot system replaces each ancestor node of that node that has not yet been replaced with a new node that has the same child nodes as the replaced node. The snapshot system also replaces the node to be modified with a new node that points to the same child nodes of the replaced node.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 8, 2003Publication date: January 13, 2005Inventor: John Guthrie

Publication number: 20020129064Abstract: A method and system for injecting code into an existing HTML document that enables the conditional generation and incorporation of an injectable component is provided. The injection mechanism provided enables a user to display an add-on user interface component within a web page using a technique that is transparent to the normal processing within a browser application. The injection mechanism installs interceptor code as a proxy server between a client browser and a server. The interceptor code monitors all HTTP messages sent from the client browser and injects code into each HTML document that is sent from a server to the client browser. The injected code when executed by the client browser conditionally inserts HTML code into the received HTML document. The inserted HTML code is then used by the client browser to generate a new component, for example a user interface component.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 1, 2001Publication date: September 12, 2002Inventor: John Guthrie

Patent number: 6401077Abstract: A method and system for enabling a page description provided by a source server to perform additional behavior provided by a portal server. The page description (e.g., an HTML document) is associated with one or more items (e.g., a product). The enabling system executes at the portal server and receives a selection of the page description (e.g., a URL) from a client computer. The enabling system then retrieves from the source server the selected page description. The enabling system adds to the retrieved page description a user interface element that describes an action to be performed so that the additional behavior (e.g., placing an order for the product) can be performed for the associated item. The enabling system may also redirect to the portal server the navigation references of the retrieved page description so that all navigation based on the page description is routed through the portal server.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1999Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Network Commerce, Inc.Inventors: Glenn Godden, John Guthrie
