Patent number: 4387804Abstract: A package for containing a preselected amount of a product in the form of a pill or the like is adapted to be converted for use as a cup for containing liquid and includes a pair of sidewalls made of paperboard which are joined together along three mutual edges thereof, the fourth mutual edges defining the top of the cup. A support flap is connected by a perforated score line along an edge of one of the sidewalls at the top of the cup and has a plastic blister bonded to one face thereof within which a pill or other product may be contained. The support flap is provided with an aperture therein registering with the interior of the blister and a frangible closure, preferably a metal foil, is secured in overlapping relationship to the aperture to prevent loss of the product prior to the time of use. Spaced fold lines in the sidewalls allow folding of the package to a compact condition for storage, and the support flap may be torn away from the top of the cup during use to allow ready access to the product.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1982Date of Patent: June 14, 1983Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: John J. Patent number: 4344537Abstract: An expandable carton and a blank for forming same has top and bottom panels which are coupled by a self-locking expanding arrangement along three respective side edges of the top and bottom panels. At the fourth side edges of the top and bottom panels, closure flaps are hingedly coupled to close and lock the carton in its expanded or assembled configuration. This permits the carton to be shipped and stored in essentially flat, collapsed configuration, and then easily assembled and closed by simple manual operations without gluing. The carton may be opened by a tear strip arrangement to gain access to the carton interior.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1980Date of Patent: August 17, 1982Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: John J. Patent number: 4311233Abstract: An easel type display package suitable for containing and displaying a plurality of individually packaged products includes a rear wall, a pair of sidewalls, and a front wall which is substantially cut-away to reveal the product. The rear wall is inclined rearwardly to support the product within the package in an upwardly tilted position. Stabilizing structure for preventing the package from tipping over includes a support flap cut from the rear wall and a connecting flap hingedly connected to the support flap. The support flap is hingedly connected to the rear wall and extends downwardly and outwardly therefrom, while the connecting flap extends inwardly toward the rear wall and is provided with a locking tongue. A cover flap hingedly connected to the bottom wall extends upwardly in overlying relationship to the cut-out and includes a slit for receiving the locking tongue of the connecting flap therein.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1980Date of Patent: January 19, 1982Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: John J. Patent number: 4304327Abstract: A binder sleeve to hold a pair of containers together as a unitized package and for supporting the containers above a plane surface includes a tube formed from an endless paperboard strip which can be separated along a central perforated score line into two pieces, each having a linear edge and an opposed undulating edge. The sleeve is placed around a pair of containers, held in face-to-face juxtaposition, to form the unitized package for marketing. Upon disassembly of the package and separation of the sleeve, the linear edge of one of the sleeve halves can be placed on a plane support surface and one of the containers supported in spaced relation above the surface on the undulating edge. This is particularly useful where the container contains a food to be cooked in a microwave oven, as the energy can be evenly distributed about the food in the container.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1980Date of Patent: December 8, 1981Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: John J. Austin

Patent number: 4301962Abstract: A folder constructed from a one-piece paperboard blank contains two inner opposed pocket enclosures, for example, for the storage of payment cards and the like. The folder includes an outer panel having a die-cut window through which information may be displayed and a spinal region in which premium items may be positioned.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1980Date of Patent: November 24, 1981Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventors: Lewis P. Monckton, John J. Austin

Patent number: 4291806Abstract: A venting arrangement in a carton with a top panel and two side panels forms an opening in the carton to facilitate the escape of gas from the interior of the carton. The venting arrangement comprises at least one vent flap defined by two perforated lines and one fold line in a carton panel. The vent flap is separated along the perforated lines and folded about the fold line to move the vent flap out of the plane of carton panel to form the gas relief opening in the carton.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1980Date of Patent: September 29, 1981Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: John J. Patent number: 4279933Abstract: A paperboard container for use in a microwave oven to cook an expandable food has an octagonal bottom support panel, upwardly and outwardly extending trapezoidal side panels connected to each edge of the bottom support panel, and a pop-up cover of overlapped, semi-ovoid top panels. A top panel is foldably connected to an edge of each of the side panels and a circular seal is removably attached to one of the top panels and an opposed one thereof to close the container. Upon removal of the seal, the top panels assume a substantially upright position as extensions of the side panels to enclose and support, along with the bottom support panel and side panels, an expanded food package.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1980Date of Patent: July 21, 1981Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventors: John J. Austin, George Webinger

Patent number: 4277506Abstract: A paperboard container for use in a microwave oven to cook an expandable food has a square bottom support panel, upwardly and outwardly tapering, concave, trapezoidal side panels connected to each edge of the bottom support panel, and a cover of overlapped, top panels. A top panel is foldably connected to an upper arcuate edge of each of the side panels and a seal is removably attached to one of the top panels and an opposed one thereof to close the container. Upon expansion of the food within the container in a microwave oven, the concave side panels will expand to aid in confining the food within the perimeter of the container.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1980Date of Patent: July 7, 1981Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: John J. Patent number: 4266716Abstract: A carton with a pyramid-shaped bottom and a blank for forming same has a collapsible pyramid-forming bottom structure which is hingedly coupled to the bottom edges of the side wall panels of the carton. The bottom structure comprises four triangular bottom panels, each of which is hingedly coupled to the bottom edge of one of the side wall panels and pairs of which are hingedly coupled together. One panel of each of the pairs of bottom panels has a locking tab with an abutment edge for abutting the abutment edge of the other locking tab to retain the carton in an assembled configuration against the bias of the carton towards its collapsed configuration. This permits the carton to be shipped and stored in essentially flat, collapsed configuration and then easily rearranged to its assembled configuration by the application of inwardly directed forces against side edges of the flat, collapsed configuration of the carton.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1980Date of Patent: May 12, 1981Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: John J.
