  • Publication number: 20080312128
Abstract: The invention encompasses cell-based systems comprising biomarkers that respond to oxidative stress (OS) in a quantitative manner, and methods of use thereof. The systems are useful for screening, identifying and testing antioxidant agents, combinations, and formulations thereof for preventing, treating, or reducing symptoms of conditions associated with oxidative damage to cells. The cell-based systems are useful for identifying effective new antioxidant agents and for optimizing antioxidant formulations for targeted therapeutic applications. One cell-based system utilizes RPE cells of the eye for identifying and optimizing antioxidant compositions effective for treatment of age-related conditions such as macular degeneration. The cell-based systems provide a convenient, inexpensive and physiologically relevant in vitro alternative to human population-based methods for testing efficacy of nutritional and pharmaceutical compositions comprising antioxidants.

  • Publication number: 20080230195
Abstract: Soft tissue products with a good rate of absorbency, such as facial and bath tissue, are provided by forming a tissue sheet with a non-fibrous polymeric surface structure and thereafter topically applying a softening composition comprising a polysiloxane, a fatty alkyl derivative and glycerin. The non-fibrous polymeric surface structure is created by applying an additive composition to the surface of a tissue sheet prior to or after drying. The additive composition can be an aqueous dispersion containing an alpha-olefin polymer, an ethylene-carboxylic acid copolymer, or mixtures thereof. The alpha-olefin polymer may comprise an interpolymer of ethylene and octene, while the ethylene-carboxylic acid copolymer may comprise ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer.

  • Patent number: 7408456
Abstract: An RFID tag (200) and similar control/sensing unit (300) for a communications system are described. The control/sensing unit has a control element (301) having one or more states, and include an antenna (207) as well as an electrical circuit (201-206) generating a pulse control signal for controlling transmission from the antenna and varying a parameter of the pulse control signal in dependence on the state of the control element (301). Also disclosed is a receiving communication unit in the form of a base unit or system controller for such a communications system, the unit including a receiver (100) for receiving a pulsed RF signal and an electrical circuit (105-106) for detecting a parameter of the pulsed RF signal. • Publication number: 20080140707
Abstract: An improved system and method is provided for clustering objects using indexes for a matrix representing a collection of objects. Objects to be clustered may be represented as a rectangular matrix. An index may be created for accessing the rows of the matrix and an inverted index may be created for accessing the columns of the matrix based upon the connectivity of the edges between rows and columns of the matrix. Each node represented by a row may be joined to a nearest node represented by another row to produce disjoint sets of nodes. The disjoint sets of nodes may represent clusters that may then be output for use by an application. Moreover, the objects to be clustered may be clusters of objects that may be correlated into a hierarchy of clusters of objects.

  • Publication number: 20080052263
Abstract: An improved system and method is provided for identifying web communities from seed sets of web pages. A seed set of web pages may be represented as a set of seed vertices of a graph representing a collection of web pages. An initial probability distribution may be constructed on vertices of the graph by assigning a nonzero value to the vertices belonging to the seed set. Then a sequence of probability distributions may be produced on the vertices of the graph by modifying the probability distribution over a series of one-step walks of the probability distribution over the vertices of the graph. For each probability distribution produced in the sequence, level sets of vertices may be generated, and a level set with minimal conductance may be selected for each probability distribution. The level set with the least conductance may then be output representing a community of web pages.
