  • Patent number: 5455333
Abstract: Metallocenes which are useful as olefin polymerization catalysts are prepared by reacting a compound of a metal of the group 4 to 10, lanthanide or actinide series of the Periodic Table of the Elements with a magnesium halide salt of a cyclopentadienyl containing ligand in the presence of an organic halide so as to form the metallocene while simultaneously raising the oxidation state of the metal.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 16, 1993
Date of Patent: October 3, 1995
    Assignee: Albemarle Corporation
Inventors: Jamie R. Strickler, John M. Power
  • Patent number: 5359105
Abstract: Cyclopentadienyl derivatives are deprotonated by a process whereby the cyclopentadienyl derivatives are reacted with a Grignard reagent in an inert solvent which contains from about 0.5 to 1.5 equivalents per equivalent of cyclopentadienyl derivative of a cyclic ether or an acyclic polyether, so as to form a dianionic salt of said cyclopentadienyl derivative.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 1, 1993
Date of Patent: October 25, 1994
    Assignee: Albemarle Corporation
Inventors: Jamie R. Strickler, John M. Power
  • Patent number: 5302733
Abstract: A racemic mixture of a chiral, silicon bridged transition metal metallocene, which is substantially free of meso isomer, is precipitated directly from a reaction mixture as it is formed by reacting an organic solvent solution of an alkali metal salt of a silicon bridged ligand with a transition metal tetrahalide-ether complex.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 30, 1992
Date of Patent: April 12, 1994
    Assignee: Ethyl Corporation
Inventors: Steven P. Diefenbach, Meng-Sheng Ao, John M. Power, Jamie R. Strickler
  • Patent number: 5254707
Abstract: The process for preparing a compound of the formula:Cp'YNHRwherein: Cp' is a cyclopentadienyl or a substituted cyclopentadienyl group, Y is a covalent bridging group which contains one or more group 14 elements, and R is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl group, the process comprising reacting a ligand of the formula Cp'YX, wherein Cp' and Y are as defined above and X is halogen, with a substantially equimolar amount of a primary amine of the formula NH.sub.2 R, wherein R is as defined above, in an inert solvent in the presence of a HX scavenger at an elevated temperature of at least about 35.degree. C., so as to form said compound.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 7, 1992
Date of Patent: October 19, 1993
    Assignee: Ethyl Corporation
Inventors: Jamie R. Strickler, John M. Power, Meng-Sheng Ao
  • Patent number: 4050382
Abstract: A safety circuit for a marine signal device adapted to be fired after being dropped into sea water. The device has a casing which will allow the water to enter when ready for firing. A salt water battery, a water pressure operated switch and an electric blasting cap are all connected in series within the casing. A resistor of selected value is connected across the terminals of the battery so that the battery will be discharged in a predetermined time if the blasting cap fails to be detonated by the action of water pressure on the switch at a predetermined depth. Furthermore, a shunt is provided between the leads of the blasting cap to reduce the hazards during handling due to static charges or radio frequencies. The shunt may be manually removed prior to firing or in one embodiment the pressure operated switch automatically disconnects the shunt when the switch is operated by water pressure.
