  • Patent number: 8743667
Abstract: A thermally-assisted recording (TAR) disk drive operates by turning on write current prior to the application of heat to the recording layer by the near-field transducer (NFT). In a TAR disk drive that uses thermal fly-height control (TFC), TFC power is at a first power level that keeps the write pole at a predetermined fly-height. The write current is then turned on, either simultaneously with or after a reduction in TFC power. The write pole then reaches its optimal fly-height as a result of the combination of write pole protrusion caused by the write current and retraction of the write pole caused by the reduction in TFC power. After the write pole has reached its optimal fly-height, heat is applied to the recording layer by the NFT. The combination of write current and heat causes writing to occur at the optimal write pole fly-height.

  • Patent number: 8731205
Abstract: Methods and systems for fitting a bone conduction device are provided herein. These methods and systems comprise determining a gain to be used by the bone conduction device in providing signals at a particular frequency. In determining the gain, a fitting system may provide a test sound that is modulated between a first signal provided to a speaker and a second audible signal provided to a bone conduction device. The first and second audible signal may comprise properties such that when the two signals are added together they produce a constant amplitude output. In an embodiment, each of the first and second audible signals may comprise substantially identical frequency characteristics and signal amplitudes, such as, for example, equal amplitude sinusoids centered on the particular frequency for the measurement.

  • Patent number: 8667035
Abstract: A filesystem conversion process converts a filesystem from one implementation type to another type while the filesystem remains active and fully accessible. The conversion process builds a list of directories in the filesystem that are of the old filesystem type and then converts each directory until the entire filesystem is converted. Instead of the filesystem being shutdown to perform the conversion, the conversion process may run as a background thread that does not interfere with normal filesystem operations.
