  • Publication number: 20030083660
Abstract: A fixation system includes a device having a plurality of like threaded peg holes. Two types of pegs are couplable within the peg holes. One type is multidirectional, and the shaft can be oriented at various angles relative to an axis extending through the peg hole. Another peg is directionally-fixed and limited to extension through the peg hole in a single direction; i.e., coaxial with the peg hole axis. The peg holes and both types of pegs are adapted such that either of the pegs can be received within any of the peg holes of the device.

  • Publication number: 20030083661
Abstract: A fixation system includes a device having a nail portion and a plate portion, preferably horizontally and vertically offset relative to the nail portion by a neck portion. The nail portion includes threaded screw holes, and the plate portion includes longitudinally displaced peg holes, each of which is adapted to orient a peg in a different orientation from the others. The system also includes unicortical screws having a reasonably large head adapted to seat against the outer surface of the bone and a threaded shaft adapted to engage in the screw holes, and pegs adapted to engage in the peg holes. Bone is clamped between the nail portion and the head of the unicortical screws. The pegs provide stabilization and support for subchondral fragments. Moreover, as the pegs preferably enter the subchondral fragments from a plurality of directions, additional fixation of the device into the bone is provided.

  • Patent number: 6508819
Abstract: A dorsal fracture is treated from the volar side by using a T-shaped plate opposite the fracture. The plate is positioned against the volar side of the radial bone, a plurality of bone screws secure the plate along a non-fractured portion of the radial bone, and a plurality of bone pegs extend from the plate and into the bone fragments of the fracture. A support portion of the plate is provided distal of the bone pegs and supports comminuted bone fragments. One or more channels are optionally provided in the plate to receive wires which are adapted to anchor distal bone fragments to the plate. The plate is adapted in strength and materials to withstand the large bending forces thereon.

  • Publication number: 20020143337
Abstract: A fixation device is provided which includes a proximal nail portion and a distal plate portion. The nail portion includes a flexible tapered section, and a rigid distal section larger in diameter and is adapted to be inserted into a medullary canal of a fractured bone. The plate portion has a low, narrow profile and includes three longitudinally displaced peg holes, each of which is adapted to orient a peg in a different orientation from the others. The plate portion is adapted to be positioned on the outside of a fractured bone when the nail portion is within the medullary canal. The device provides the benefits of both an intramedullary nail and a bone plate in a single device. The fixation device permits a minimally invasive treatment of the metaphyseal fractures that may otherwise be undertreated.

  • Publication number: 20020143338
Abstract: A fixation system includes a plate intended to be positioned against a bone, a plurality of bone screws for securing the plate along an non-fractured portion of the bone, and a plurality of bone pegs which extend from the plate and into bone fragments of the fracture to provide a supporting framework. The pegs can be oriented at various angles relative to an axis normal to the lower surface of the plate. For each peg, once the peg has been appropriately positioned within the peg hole, a set screw is threaded into the peg hole and tightened, thereby securing the peg in the selected orientation.

  • Patent number: 6440135
Abstract: A volar fixation system includes a T-shaped plate intended to be positioned against the volar side of the radial bone, a plurality of bone screws for securing the plate along an non-fractured portion of the radial bone, and a plurality of bone pegs which extend from the plate and into bone fragments of a Colles' fracture. The plate includes including a plurality of screw holes and a plurality of threaded peg holes. The bone pegs can be articulated through a range of angles within respective peg holes and fixed at a desired angle within the range. For each peg, once the peg has been appropriately positioned within the peg hole, a set screw is threaded into the peg hole and tightened, thereby securing the peg in the selected orientation.

The plate is a T-shaped plate including a plurality of screw holes and a plurality of threaded peg holes. According to a first preferred aspect of the invention, the peg holes are preferably linearly or parabolically arranged and provided such that the holes are positioned increasingly distal in a medial to lateral direction along the second side. According to a second preferred aspect, axes through the holes are oblique relative to each other and preferably angled relative to each other in two dimensions.

  • Patent number: 6273892
Abstract: A fracture fixation system is provided for the insertion of a fixation pin into the medullary canal of a fractured metacarpal, metatarsal, or phalangeal bone for stable bone fixation. The system includes one or more pins and an instrument for implanting the pins. According to one embodiment of the invention, the instrument includes a main handle and a pin handle movable relative to the main handle. The main handle includes a distal end, a drill coupled to the distal end, and a longitudinal slot which receives the pin handle. The drill includes a shaft having a distal boring tip and a groove proximal the boring tip for guiding the fixation pin. The pin handle is shaped and sized to slidably move within the longitudinal slot. Each pin preferably includes a curved, distal end. The distal end rests within the groove of the drill shaft. Movement of the pin handle within the slot of the main handle distally relative to the main handle causes the distal end of the pin to move relative to the drill shaft.
