  • Publication number: 20150141998
Abstract: A drill system for forming a curved tunnel in a bone includes a drill bit guidance device. The drill bit guidance device includes an elongated stationary outer tube extending along a first axis and an elongated inner tube assembly. The elongated inner tube assembly is configured to slidably move within the elongated stationary outer tube along the first axis and to exit from a distal end of the elongated outer tube. The elongated inner tube assembly includes an actuating tube and an actuator tube. The actuating tube slidably moves within the actuator tube and includes a plurality of semi-cross-sectional slots extending in a slot direction perpendicular to the first axis. Each slot of the actuating tube is configured to collapse inward in the slot direction when exiting the distal end of the elongated outer tube, thereby causing a distal end portion of the elongated inner tube assembly to follow a curved path.

  • Patent number: 8882492
Abstract: A system or apparatus that in one implementation includes an electromagnetic valve having an actuator rod with a first coil and a second coil positioned at different longitudinal locations on the actuator rod and being situated electrically parallel to one another in an electrical circuit. The electromagnetic valve is constructed to induce a first voltage in the second coil when the electromagnetic valve is in the open position and to induce in the second coil a second voltage lower than the first voltage when the electromagnetic valve is in the closed position. A switch changeable between a first position and a second position is located in the electrical circuit. When the switch is in the first position the electrical circuit is configured to allow current from a power source to be delivered to the second coil. When the switch is in the second position the electrical circuit is configured to not allow current from a power source to be delivered to the second coil.

  • Patent number: 8858600
Abstract: The present invention provides a dynamic stabilization device positionable about a portion of a spinal column. The stabilization device may generally include a first component and a second component, where the first and second components are movably coupled to one another to define an arcuate path of motion. The stabilization device may also include one or more adjustment elements positionable within first and second adjustment openings to affect the path of motion between the first and second components and/or the behavior and characteristics of the movement. In addition, one or more resistive elements may be adjustably positionable within either and/or both of the first and second adjustment openings to provide resistance and/or dampening of the forces experienced as the first and second components move relative to one another. The stabilization device may further define a joint having three degrees of freedom to adapt to movement of a spinal column.

  • Patent number: 8405411
Abstract: A method for controlling an induction apparatus having an induction coil. In one implementation the induction apparatus includes a capacitor that is connected in parallel with the induction coil to form a parallel resonant circuit, and also includes a switch connected in series with the parallel resonant circuit, between the parallel resonant circuit and a reference voltage. According to one method, a digital test signal dependent on the voltage in a node disposed between the switch and the parallel resonant circuit is generated, the switch is closed for a predetermined closure time and then reopened at the end of the closure time. With the switch reopened, the test signal is evaluated for a predetermined waiting time in order to determine the presence or absence of a vessel on the induction coil.

  • Patent number: 8159387
Abstract: Systems and methods for obtaining target elevation information are disclosed. The systems and methods use multiple vertical transmitters and one or more receivers to infer changes in the elevation plane and the height of objects. Changes in elevation and heights of objects are inferred from path length differences between the transmitters and a particular backscattering point. Using known geometric information regarding the configuration of the transmitters, propagation time differences can be estimated via time delay estimation methods in either the time or frequency domain. Appropriate modulation schemes are used such that the multiple signals transmitted are separable upon reception.
