  • Publication number: 20070201797
Abstract: Glass-based micropositioning systems and methods are disclosed. The micropositioning systems and methods utilize microbumps (40) formed in a glass substrate (12 or 100). The microbumps are formed by subjecting a portion of the glass substrate to localized heating, which results in local rapid expansion of glass where the heat was applied. The height and shape of the microbumps depend on the type of glass substrate and the amount and form of heat delivered to the substrate. The microbumps allow for active or passive micropositioning of optical elements, including planar waveguides and optical fibers. Optical assemblies formed using microbump micropositioners are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20070141350
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for preparing visible light optical polarizers using a non-halide silver salt and any glass composition that the non-halide silver salts is soluble, provided that the glass composition, including the silver salt, was a halide content that is, on a molar basis, 10% or less than the silver content, on a molar basis, of the glass composition. The silver containing glass is hydrogen reduced prior to stretching to form an optical polarizer. The invention enables one to form a visible light polarizer having a polarizing layer thickness in the range 10-40 ?m in which the silver particles have a surround index sufficiently removed from the blue polarizer region to allow good contrast.

  • Publication number: 20070062444
Abstract: A powder spray for lengthy parts includes a booth wall structure comprised primarily of doors. A moveable roof may be raised and lowered to clean powder overspray from the interior surfaces of the booth. A cleaning process may be performed with a sideways extraction mode and a downward extraction mode. The mode change occurs when a bulkhead that travels with the moveable roof blocks the inlet duct to the recovery system. The recovery system may be a cyclone system for example. The doors of the booth are hinged so that they can be positioned for spraying operations and cleaning operations. Live hinge designs are provided and hose stress relief designs are also provided. The roof may carry accumulators for pressurized air that feed cleaning nozzles as the roof descends. In addition, exhaust air may be used to assist cleaning the interior surfaces as the roof descends. All of the energy provided for cleaning and color change may be provided by accumulators.

  • Publication number: 20070017443
Abstract: Operator interface provides identification of one or more operational functions, each at an operational location, to an operator via an access device. The access device may have a wireless connectivity with the operational functions, and presents menus that are specific to the identified function. The access device optionally provides data, control functions, recipes, menus and so on to the operator. In this manner, an operator can exercise local control of the operational functions at different operational locations, thereby reducing lost time and energy transferring between the operational locations.

  • Publication number: 20070007894
Abstract: A hermetically sealed glass package and method for manufacturing the hermetically sealed glass package are described herein using an OLED display as an example. Basically, the hermetically sealed OLED display is manufactured by providing a first substrate plate and a second substrate plate and depositing a frit onto the second substrate plate. OLEDs are deposited on the first substrate plate. An irradiation source (e.g., laser, infrared light) is then used to heat the frit which melts and forms a hermetic seal that connects the first substrate plate to the second substrate plate and also protects the OLEDs. The frit is glass that was doped with at least one transition metal and possibly a CTE lowering filler such that when the irradiation source heats the frit, it softens and forms a bond. This enables the frit to melt and form the hermetic seal while avoiding thermal damage to the OLEDs.

  • Publication number: 20060219807
Abstract: A material or color changer has a common feed passage that is connected to two or more inlet passages. The common feed passage can be reverse purged in a direction that is opposite a direction of powder flow through the common feed passage. A valve element seals a supply port that connects the inlet passage to the common feed passage to eliminate dead space and form a near bore line seal. The valve element is an elastic material that expands in response to applied compressed air inside the valve element. A remote activation function may be provided to facilitate initiating a color change procedure. In one embodiment, the remote activation function may be a pneumatic foot switch, while in another embodiment it may be an electrical switch, such as a membrane switch for example, mounted on a spray gun.

  • Publication number: 20060130523
Abstract: The coefficient of absorption of a pre-selected region of a glass sheet is preferentially increased. The glass sheet may thereafter be sealed to a substrate using a sealing laser. In one embodiment, the coefficient of absorption sheet is increased by irradiating the glass sheet at a wavelength of about 248 nm, preferably through a mask, to produce an irradiated pattern on the glass sheet having a pre-determined shape. The glass sheet is then heat treated, placed over a substrate and sealed to the substrate by exposing the irradiated pattern to a sealing laser light having a wavelength in the range between about 355 nm and 532 nm to produce a glass envelope. The method disclosed herein is useful, inter alia, for manufacturing electro-luminescent devices, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) and in particular organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

  • Publication number: 20050229845
Abstract: A nozzle assembly for a material application device includes an expansion chamber for slowing down the velocity of powder fed to the nozzle from a dense phase pump. The nozzle assembly includes a nozzle insert that forms the expansion chamber and provides air assist function. The nozzle includes an integral deflector, and further includes a passageway for a charging electrode so that the electrical path is routed away from the powder path, while permitting the electrode tip to be centered in the powder spray pattern from the nozzle. The nozzle also includes air wash for the electrode. The nozzle outlet orifice has a cross-sectional area that is equal to or greater than the inlet cross-sectional area so that a slow moving dense phase powder cloud is produced by the nozzle.
