Abstract: A method for downloading and displaying a video program using a mobile terminal that includes a first radio access network having a first data transfer rate and a second radio access network having a second data transfer rate faster than the first data transfer rate. The downloaded video program is displayed at a predetermined playback rate. Excess portions of the downloaded video program that result when a rate at which the video program is downloaded exceeds the predetermined playback rate are buffered. A third data transfer rate that is lower than the first transfer rate is calculated in response to the predetermined playback rate, the buffered excess portions and the time duration of the remainder of the video program. The third data transfer rate is negotiated with the first network for downloading the video program when the difference between the first and third data transfer rates exceeds a threshold level.

Abstract: A system and method including computing keying information by a server for authentication of devices accessing a wireless local area network and forwarding the keying information by the server to access points included in a security domain of the wireless local area network, wherein one of the access points is associated with a mobile device are described.

Abstract: A method for enabling an access device to securely access content from at least a content provider and prevent a cloned access device from accessing such content. During registration of the access device with the content provider, the access device requests from a designated certificate authority a certificate having a public key of the content provider therein. Upon authentication of the certificate, the access device generates a key and uses the public key to exchange the key with the content provider. The key is then used for subsequent secure communications between the access device and the content provider. In this manner, a cloned device does not have access to the key and is unable to download content from the content provider.

Abstract: A wireless LAN provides access to a mobile terminal (MT) utilizing beacon frames to broadcast access point (AP) service specific information. The MT listens to the beacon frames and compares the broadcast service(s) and service parameters to a predetermined service profile stored in the MT. When the services offered by an AP matches the services designated in the stored service profile, the MT associates with that particular AP.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a medium access control method for data communication through CATV access network over coaxial cable, wherein the method comprises transmitting downstream data frames from a central device to network terminals in downstream time slots of super frames and receiving upstream data frames from said network terminals to said central device in upstream time slots of the super frames over a same carrier frequency, said super frame being divided into multiple time slots comprising at least one downstream time slot intended for transmitting data frames, and one or more upstream time slots which are assigned respectively by said central device to said network terminals for transmitting upstream data frames, each one upstream time slot being allocable to one network terminal. Advantageously, the data is transmitted through a CATV access network over coaxial cable by using this access control method with guaranteed QoS.

Abstract: A computer method and related apparatus for delivering content files to a client computer are disclosed wherein a request for a content file on a content server is received from a client; a future time period during which the content file will be available on a cache server is determined; and a rewritten uniform resource locator comprising time period availability information, or a link to a file comprising the time period availability information, is returned from the server to the client. The client can use the information to obtain the content file in the determined future time period.

Abstract: A method and system for extending the capabilities of a handheld device by providing a framework within which small handheld devices can use their helper environment, the devices around them, to expand their limited capabilities. Such a framework can be deployed in the office, at home for user convenience or in a public access area as a revenue generating service. A handheld device interacts with the helper environment through several essential steps including device discovery, service query, request transfer and remote control. In order to ensure the proper operation of such an environment, the framework provides essential system components for admission control, resource allocation, task scheduling and device coordination.

Abstract: The downloading of content to a requesting client (A1, A2 and A3) through content distribution network consisting of edge servers occurs upon receiving a content request, a content server responses with a request-routing message that includes source data identifying the content and path data identifying a path through the network to a source of such content. Having the path information in request-routing message enables a requesting client to make the request to a particular edge server, which in turn can register the downloading request and access the content from an appropriate location, thereby obviating the frequent communication between the content server and edge servers on the path.

Abstract: A method for enabling access to digital rights managed (DRM) content from a server to a portable playback device using a device that functions as a proxy for enabling communication between the server and the portable playback device. The method provides for establishing a connection with a device capable of operating as a gateway device for passing data between the portable playback device and the server, requesting that the device establish a connection with the server and operate as a proxy for enabling data exchange between the portable playback device and the server, sending to the server, upon establishing the connection with the server via the device operating as a proxy, data indicating DRM solutions supported by the portable playback device, and a list comprising requested DRM content to be downloaded to the portable playback device, and receiving from the server, via the device operating as a proxy, the requested DRM content and DRM rules associated with the received content.

Abstract: A method and system for providing secure, anonymous access to a wireless local area network, including configuring an access point to drop packets except packets exhibiting an URL access protocol like HTTP and HTTPS, intercepting a URL access request by an access point from a mobile device via a web browser, re-directing the URL access request to a web server by the access point generating a security key by one of the access points and the web server, communicating the generated security key to the said web server securely by the access point or vice versa and setting the security key by the access point is described. A mobile device including means for forwarding a request for secure access to a wireless local area network via a URL access request, means for receiving a mobile code or a signal for displaying a security key and means for setting the security key is also described.

Abstract: Public wireless communications will increasingly extend into wireless LAN (WLAN) environments in order to meet the ubiquitous access, high data rate, and local services demands of future Internet appliances. By relying on IP-level services mechanisms, the Public Access Mobility LAN (PAMLAN) can simultaneously support different air interfaces, franchises for multiple services providers, and a multi-segment LAN environment including handoffs. The PAMLAN supports virtual operator LANs representing different network services providers, authorization and accounting mechanism, support of multiple air interfaces, and local IP mobility. A router associated with each base station realizes this highly distributed IP networking environment, and a QoS-enabled switched Ethernet core supports virtual networks and QoS services.

Abstract: A system and method schedules downloading of content files from a content server to a client through a cache server. A user can request a content file for future delivery at a certain service time at a certain location such as a hotspot. A cache server receives these requests and sorts them in an order which depends on the relative service times, and eliminates redundancies by only downloading content files not already stored in the cache server. A scheduling algorithm minimizes the instances of tardiness under the constraint of cache storage capacity.

Abstract: There is provided a system for providing content through a Content Delivery/distribution Network (CDN) that includes a plurality of storage entities. A Content Requesting device (CR) generates and transmits requests for content. A Content Server (CS) receives the requests from the CR, provides notifications regarding a current location of the content, and at least one of stores the content and interfaces with the CDN to distribute the content to one of the plurality of storage entities. A Content Consuming device (CC) receives the notifications from the CS and retrieves the requested content from one of the CS and the one of the plurality of storage entities based on the current location of the content specified in the notifications.

Abstract: There is provided a method for switching a mobile terminal from a first network interface to a second network interface in a local network environment. The method includes the step of utilizing a same Internet Protocol (IP) address by the mobile terminal for both the first network interface and the second network interface.

Abstract: A method and system for caching data such as audio, video and/or other data uses information including future access request information for improved caching performance. According to an exemplary embodiment, a cache system includes a cache operative to cache a plurality of data items. A processor is operative to enable at least one of the data items in the cache to be replaced using future access request information for the at least one data item.

Abstract: There is provided a method for automatically detecting and indicating a mis-configuration condition in an electronic device having one or more factory-default settings. At least one mis-configuration rule that relates to at least one mis-configuration condition of the electronic device, is checked against at least one corresponding current configuration setting to determine whether the electronic device is mis-configured. A mis-configuration alert is provided with respect to the electronic device, when the electronic device is determined to be mis-configured in said checking step.

Abstract: A portable communications device advantageously can access an enterprise network through a Virtual Private Network link without the need for a VPN client. To accomplish communications, the portable communications device establishes a communication link with a wireless access point using one or several well-known secure wireless protocols. The wireless access point establishes a communication link with the enterprise network through the VPN and bridges the connections to afford an end-to-end link between the portable computing device and the enterprise network.

Abstract: To effect seamless transition of a mobile terminal user (16) from a first radio access network (12) to second radio access network (14), a temporary home agent (19) in the second radio access network assigns the user a co-location address which becomes the source address for all packets originated by the user while accessing the second network. Packets sent in reply to those originated with the co-location address as the source address pass directly to the mobile terminal user at the second network without first being tunneled through the first radio access network. Upon the transition of the mobile terminal user to the second radio access network, the first radio access network will forward any packets addressed to the user at the first source address.

Abstract: There is provided, in a source device, a method for handing off a media session from the source device to a target device in a network. The target device is informed of an impending handoff of the media session. Session state information is transmitted to the target device in preparation for the handoff. The source device is authenticated with respect to a router that is common to both the source device and the target device, prior to the handoff. The conducting of the media session on the source device is ceased in place of the target device, subsequent to the handoff.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing a session key for allowing a mobile terminal to access a wireless local area network (WLAN). The invention provides for establishing a first secure channel between an access point and a virtual operator, and suggesting a session key to the virtual operator from the access point. A second secure channel is established between the virtual operator and a user, and the session key is sent to the user via the second secure channel upon successful user authentication. The mobile terminal accesses the WLAN using the session key.
