    Abstract: Methods of operation of a wireless device are provided. In particular, Media Access Control (MAC) protocol aspects are disclosed relating to Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) cells and, more generally, to cells of a cellular communications network operating in an unlicensed frequency spectrum. According to one aspect, a method of operation of a wireless device comprises transmitting an Uplink (UL) transmission on a cell for a corresponding UL Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) process, the cell operating in an unlicensed frequency spectrum, and setting a locally maintained status for the UL HARQ process to Acknowledgement (ACK) based on an assumption that the UL transmission was successful.

    Abstract: According to some embodiments, a method for use in a frequency-hopping wireless transmitter for transmitting in unlicensed spectrum comprises: obtaining a configuration for a plurality of frequency channels in unlicensed spectrum; and transmitting a data transmission according to a frequency-hopping pattern across the plurality of frequency channels. The configuration for the plurality of frequency channels comprises a first subset of frequency channels for downlink transmission and a second subset of frequency channels for uplink transmission. The frequency channels in the first and second subsets are mutually exclusive. In some embodiments the first and second subset of frequency channels each comprise 160 frequency channels in the 2.4 GHz band, or 50 frequency channels in the 915 MHz band.

    Abstract: In one aspect of the teachings herein, a transmitter uses a burst numbering scheme to dynamically number the transmit slots comprising a burst transmission on a secondary carrier operated in unlicensed spectrum, where the secondary carrier is time aligned with a primary carrier that operates in licensed spectrum and uses a fixed numbering scheme for its transmit slots. By assigning the transmit slot numbers dynamically, the transmitter has foreknowledge of the transmit slot numbers of the transmit slots within the transmit burst, and can therefore carry out processing that is dependent on the transmit slot number(s) assigned to the transmit slots comprising the burst, even when the burst start time is variable. Correspondingly, a receiver also has foreknowledge of the transmit slot numbers associated with a received burst that was dynamically numbered by a transmitter according to a burst numbering scheme known to the receiver.

    Abstract: In one aspect, the teachings herein describe an enhanced Reference Signal, RS, that is designed to be available for transmission in any symbol of a subframe. The enhanced RS may be an enhanced Sounding Reference Signal, SRS, or an enhanced DeModulation Reference Signal, DMRS. The enhanced RS provides an advantageous mechanism for channel capture in Listen-Before-Talk, LBT, scenarios, because subsequent to performing a successful Clear Channel Assessment, CCA, a node can begin transmitting the enhanced RS, to thereby capture the channel. The node can then transition into an actual data transmission on the channel according to whatever timing constraints are associated with the data transmission. In at least one embodiment, the enhanced RS is used for capturing an uplink channel on an LTE carrier operated in unlicensed spectrum, as part of a License Assisted Access, LAA, configuration.

    Abstract: Devices and methods for transmitting information in resource blocks between a base station and one or more communication devices are disclosed. In each resource block (RB) used for a data or control channel transmission, a plurality of non-overlapping regions of resource elements (REs) are defined. Each region is associated with one or multiple unique reference symbols (RSs), and may be further associated with one or more antenna ports. When user equipment (UE) demodulates the information it receives in a particular region of an RB, it uses the RS and/or antenna port associated with that region. The RS and/or antenna port information may be used, for example, to estimate a channel of the communication network or to demodulate and decode the data contained within the associated regions.

The UE, having knowledge of the relations between pilot sequence assignment patterns and control information, interprets the received pilot sequence assignment pattern as specific control information.     Abstract: According to some embodiments, a method for use in a user equipment (UE) of managing a listen-before-talk (LBT) contention window size comprises receiving scheduling for a current burst of contiguous uplink subframes. For each subframe the scheduling comprises an associated hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) process identifier and a new data indicator (NDI). The method determines a reference subframe based on a previously-scheduled burst of contiguous uplink subframes. The reference subframe is associated with a reference HARQ process identifier. When the UE determines the HARQ process identifier associated with a subframe of the current scheduled burst of contiguous uplink subframes matches the reference HARQ process identifier and the NDI indicates new data, the method resets the LBT contention window. When the reference HARQ process identifier matches, but the associated NDI indicates a retransmission, or the HARQ process identifier does not match, the method increments the LBT contention window.
