  • Publication number: 20040218697
Abstract: A method includes generating a received signal vector from a signal received over a channel. The received signal vector includes a plurality of symbols encoded in accordance with a block code having a structure. A channel matrix estimated for the channel is transformed based on the structure of the block code to generate an aggregate channel matrix. The symbols are processed using the aggregate channel matrix. A system includes a front end unit configured to generate the received signal vector, a channel estimation unit configured to estimate the channel matrix, and a processing unit configured to generate the aggregate channel matrix and process the symbols using the aggregate channel matrix.

  • Publication number: 20040213184
Abstract: A method and system for using one H-ARQ process in communication systems having a Multiple Input Multiple Output antenna system. Information to be transmitted is first coded using a particular coding scheme and having a particular base coding rate. The coded information is then divided into groups of sub-blocks of coded information. Each group of sub-blocks of coded information contains one or more sub-blocks where the number of sub-blocks in a group is determined from current channel conditions of an antenna through which the group is to be transmitted. The groups are then rate matched and modulated based on the current channel conditions and transmitted through one or more antennas.

  • Publication number: 20040203473
Abstract: A method for generating channel quality feedback information in terms of quantized eigenvectors calculated from an eigenvalue decomposition that uses a channel matrix and an eigenvalue matrix to generate quantized and bounded eigenvectors. The channel correlation matrix and the eigenvalue matrix are obtained from a channel matrix formed from channel measurements of various signal parameters of signals transmitted over the communication channel. The eigenvalue decomposition uses the elements of the channel correlation matrix, the elements of the eigenvalue matrix and conditional relationships between elements of the channel correlation matrix to calculate the quantized and bounded eigenvectors. Because the elements of the quantized bounded eigenvectors can be expressed in terms of each other, not all elements of the quantized bounded vectors need be transmitted over the communication channel resulting in efficient use of the communication channel.

  • Publication number: 20040203476
Abstract: A method of data communication. Before the base station may schedule a wireless handset, the method includes the step of transmitting an initial channel condition information signal. The initial channel condition information signal corresponds with a set of transmitted blocks. Each transmitted block includes a set of orthogonal tones. The initial channel condition information signal may be derived from an average and/or a mean value of at least two of the transmitted blocks. In response to the initial channel condition information signal and/or the size of the downlink transmission, the base station, subsequently, schedules the wireless handset. Thereafter, a follow-up channel condition information signal corresponding with a number of allocated blocks is transmitted. The follow-up channel condition information signal may be derived from an average and/or a mean value of at least two of the blocks allocated by the base station to the wireless handset.

  • Publication number: 20040190643
Abstract: In the method according to the present invention, a transmit power for each eigenbeam in a set of eigenbeams forming at least a portion of a multiple transmit antenna system is determined based on noise associated with each eigenbeam in the set of eigenbeams. The set of eigenbeams is for transmitting a number of parallel complex Gaussian channels.

  • Publication number: 20040160936
Abstract: In the scheduling method of the present invention, scheduling grant messages for a user equipment are transmitted beginning in any time slot of a frame for a channel so long as the scheduling grant message does not exceed the frame. The scheduling grant message indicates user equipment is approved to transmit on an uplink dedicated channel. This downlink transmission and subsequent uplink dedicated channel transmission have a timing relationship such that no more than one user equipment will begin transmitting on a respective uplink dedicated channel at a time.

  • Publication number: 20040125900
Abstract: The per antenna capacity of each of the transmitter antennas in a MIMO system are individually determined from measurable information at the receiver end. Specifically, the channel capacity for each individual transmitter antenna is calculated at the receiver end as a function of measurable channel coefficients (also known as channel state information), the measurable average signal-to-noise ratio, and the number of transmitter antennas. Once the per antenna capacity of each transmitter antenna is individually determined at the receiver end, the maximum transmission rate for each data stream transmitted by each transmitter antenna is determined from that individual capacity either at the receiver end and fed back to the transmitter end, or is determined at the transmitter end from the individual transmitter antenna capacities that are fed back by the receiver end to the transmitter end. A modulation scheme that supports each maximum transmission rate is then determined based on some defined criteria.

  • Publication number: 20040085924
Abstract: A system and method for wireless communication includes multiplexing an EUDC downlink control channel so that it is transmitted like a downlink dedicated channel (DL-DPCH). The EUDC downlink control channel can be multiplexed with the DL-DPCH by code or by both code and time. The EUDC downlink control channel may be multiplexed with a downlink dedicated physical data channel (DL-DPDCH), a downlink dedicated physical control channel (DL-DPCCH), or both. In one embodiment, the EUDC downlink control channel is multiplexed by adding a multicode channel to a current DL-DPCH and treating the EUDC downlink control channel as a dedicated channel with power control functionality.

  • Publication number: 20040085936
Abstract: A wireless data communication system includes a high speed dedicated physical control channel (EU-DPCCH) used with transmissions from a mobile device to support an uplink high speed data channel. In one example the EU-DPCCH has a sub frame structure that is the same as an associated dedicated data channel and a fixed spreading factor. The EU-DPCCH allows communicating control information from the mobile device such as a pilot reference, hybrid automatic repeat request information, and backlog information regarding a buffer of the mobile device.

  • Publication number: 20040062192
Abstract: A method of data communication. The method includes initially receiving one or more channel quality information signals from each wireless unit. The channel quality information may be received in response to the transmission of one or more pilot signals. Once the channel quality information signal(s) from each wireless unit are received, the method then includes selecting one or more transmit powers and one or more transmission rates for each wireless unit. Thereafter, one or more blocks of orthogonal continuous waveforms may be transmitted over a channel to each wireless unit using the selected transmit power and selected transmission rate.

  • Publication number: 20040062221
Abstract: A method for conveying signaling information of a communication system that uses MIMO antenna systems. To enable a relatively larger amount of information to be conveyed over the communication system and thus exploit the use of the MIMO antenna system, forward link signaling channels are provided where such channels contain swapping information that allow the communication system to retransmit traffic information using any one of the antenna elements of a MIMO system. The forward link signaling channels also contain channel assignment information that indicate which particular groups of channels are available for use by particular users of the communication system.

  • Publication number: 20040017860
Abstract: A method of communication using one or more antennas. The method includes varying at least one of a plurality of transmission streams to be loaded onto an antenna. Each transmission stream may be varied in response to the channel conditions corresponding with the relevant antenna. Varying one or more transmission streams may be realized by modulating and/or rate matching each relevant transmission stream in accordance with the air interface characteristics of the relevant antenna. The rate of the stream may be adjusted by puncturing at least one bit from the transmission stream and/or filling the transmission stream with in at least one bit.

  • Publication number: 20030186650
Abstract: A method of communication using one or more antennas. The method distributes a signal's energy over at least one transmission path in response to the air interface characteristics. The energy of the signal is adjusted or weighted by considering the possible transmission paths available. Each available propagation path has a transmissive quality based on the air interface characteristics (e.g., the matrix of propagation coefficients). Consequently, each signal, given its associated energy, is directed along the path(s) in response to its attenuation characteristics, for example, derived from the air interface characteristics.
