  • Patent number: 8841007
Abstract: Various magnetic stack embodiments may be constructed with a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) having a first thickness disposed between a substrate and a magnetic recording layer. A heatsink may have a second thickness and be disposed between the SUL and the magnetic recording layer. The first and second thicknesses may each be tuned to provide predetermined thermal conductivity and magnetic permeability throughout the data media.

  • Patent number: 8765273
Abstract: A data media may generally be configured in accordance with various embodiments with contactingly adjacent first and second heatsink layers that are tuned with a common crystallographic orientation and with different thermal conductivities to provide a predetermined thermal gradient. The data media may further be configured with a recording layer formed with the common crystallographic orientation adjacent the first and second heatsink layers.

  • Publication number: 20130288079
Abstract: Various magnetic slack embodiments may be constructed with a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) having a first thickness disposed between a substrate and a magnetic recording layer. A heatsink may have a second thickness and be disposed between the SUL and the magnetic recording layer. The first and second thicknesses may each be tuned to provide predetermined thermal conductivity and magnetic permeability throughout the data media.

  • Patent number: 8455118
Abstract: An apparatus may include a composite soft underlayer and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer overlying the composite soft underlayer. The composite soft underlayer may include a growth template layer, a negative magnetic anisotropy layer overlying the growth template layer, and a magnetically soft layer overlying the negative magnetic anisotropy layer. In some embodiments, the negative magnetic anisotropy layer includes a plurality of grains, and substantially all the grains have negative magnetic anisotropy along an axis substantially perpendicular to a major plane of the composite soft underlayer. In some embodiments, the negative magnetic anisotropy layer includes a thickness of less than or equal to about 3 nm.

  • Patent number: 7541105
Abstract: Epitaxial ferroelectric and magnetic recording structures having graded lattice matching layers are disclosed. A single crystal material such as Si may be used as a substrate material upon which the graded lattice matching layers are deposited. The lattice matching layers may comprise metals and metal alloys, or may comprise oxides doped with selected elements or deposited under different oxygen pressures. A recording layer, such as ferroelectric lead zirconium titanate or a magnetic Fe/Pt multilayer structure, is deposited on the graded lattice matching layers.
