    Abstract: A packaged UV-LED device comprises a die carrier member having a cup-shaped recess, a fused silica lens member that is anodic bonded to the die carrier member, and a UV-LED die that is flip-chip mounted within a sealed cavity formed by the carrier member and the lens member. The carrier member involves a unitary cup member fashioned in an economical way from monocrystalline silicon wafer material. A dielectric/aluminum reflector that is effective for UV radiation and that does not degrade and overheat is disposed on the sidewalls of the recess. The lens member is anodic bonded to a silicon surface of the rim of this unitary cup member at a time when the UV-LED die is disposed in the recess. The anodic bonding is done in such way that the die is not damaged and such that the entire packaged UV-LED device includes no UV-degradable adhesive.

The MPE region may include a plurality of diffractive features which exhibit periodicity along at least a first axis of periodicity and a second axis of periodicity. The MPE region may be positioned to receive the guided beam from the ICG region and to diffract it in a plurality of directions to create a plurality of diffracted beams. The EPE region may be positioned to receive one or more of the diffracted beams from the MPE region and to out couple them from the optically transmissive substrate as output beams.

    Abstract: A method for synthesis of high anisotropy L10 FeNi (tetrataenite) thin films is provided that combines physical vapor deposition via atomic layer sputtering and rapid thermal annealing with extreme heating and cooling speeds. The methods can induce L10-ordering in FeNi thin films. The process uses a base composite film of a support substrate, a seed layer, a multilayer thin film of FeNi with alternating single atomic layers of Fe and Ni that mimics the atomic plane of the final L10 FeNi alloy, and a capping layer. The Fe and Ni bilayers are grown on top of a Si substrate with a thermally oxidized SiO2 seed layer to mechanically strain the sample during rapid thermal annealing.

    Abstract: The present disclosure relates to methods and systems for storing and querying data. According to the embodiments of the present invention, two-layer indexes are created for multi-dimension data, wherein the primary index is created based on two or more dimensions to retrieve respective data units of the data, while the secondary index is created based on specific dimensions to retrieve respective data blocks in the data unit. Correspondingly, when receiving a multi-dimension query request for data, the primary retrieval first determines a data unit including the target data based on a primary index, and then the secondary retrieval quickly locates a data block including the target data based on the secondary index. In this way, the multi-dimension retrieval can be efficiently performed. Moreover, by appropriately setting the size of a smallest data block, the I/O efficiency of data access will be significantly enhanced.

    Abstract: Techniques are described for using confinement structures and/or pattern gratings to reduce or prevent the wicking of sealant polymer (e.g., glue) into the optically active areas of a multi-layered optical assembly. A multi-layered optical structure may include multiple layers of substrate imprinted with waveguide grating patterns. The multiple layers may be secured using an edge adhesive, such as a resin, epoxy, glue, and so forth. A confinement structure such as an edge pattern may be imprinted along the edge of each layer to control and confine the capillary flow of the edge adhesive and prevent the edge adhesive from wicking into the functional waveguide grating patterns of the layers. Moreover, the edge adhesive may be carbon doped or otherwise blackened to reduce the reflection of light off the edge back into the interior of the layer, thus improving the optical function of the assembly.

    Abstract: A method for fabricating artificial skyrmions and skyrmion lattices with a stable ground state at room temperature and in the absence of magnetic fields is provided. The lattices are formed by patterning vortex-state nanodots over macroscopic areas on top of an underlayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA); and preparing artificial skyrmion lattices using ion irradiation to suppress PMA in the underlayer and allow imprinting of the vortex structure from the nanodots to form the skyrmion lattices. Alternatively the skyrmions can be formed by ion-irradiating select asymmetric nanodot regions of the PMA underlayer, leading to planar skyrmions without nanodot protrusions. These artificial skyrmions can be used for low dissipation information storage, such as magnetic memory, logic devices and sensors.
