  • Publication number: 20120315345
Abstract: One or more embodiments of the present invention describe a novel use of capsanthin and/or fatty-acyl ester of capsanthin to inhibit both the differentiation of pre-adipocytes to adipocytes and the accumulation of fat in the adipocytes. One or more embodiments of the present invention are based on findings that capsanthin contained in some natural products such as red pepper, paprika, bell pepper, etc. have anti-adipogenic activity by inhibiting both the differentiation of pre-adipocyte into adipocyte and the accumulation of fat in adipocytes, Therefore, this findings provide a functional food and a pharmaceutical composition wherein capsanthins and the extract of any natural products containing the same components are included in the functional food and the pharmaceutical composition, to offer obesity prevention and/or treatment effects.

  • Patent number: 8167804
Abstract: An optimized elastic modulus reconstruction procedure can estimate the nonlinear elastic properties of vascular wall from intramural strain and pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurements. A noninvasive free-hand ultrasound scanning procedure is used to apply external force, comparable to the force in measuring a subject's blood pressure, to achieve higher strains by equalizing the internal arterial baseline pressure. PWV is estimated at the same location where intramural strain is measured. The reconstructed elastic modulus is optimized and the arterial elastic modulus can be determined and monitored using a simple dual elastic modulus reconstruction procedure.

  • Patent number: 7629819
Abstract: A clock synchronization system and method avoids output clock jitter at high frequencies and also achieves a smooth phase transition at the boundary of the coarse and fine delays. The system may use a single coarse delay line configured to generate two intermediate clocks from the input reference clock and having a fixed phase difference therebetween. The coarse delay line may have a hierarchical or a non-hierarchical structure. A phase mixer receives these two intermediate clocks and generates the final output clock having a phase between the phases of the intermediate clocks. The coarse shifting in the delay line at high clock frequencies does not affect the phase relationship between the intermediate clocks fed into the phase mixer. The output clock from the phase mixer is time synchronized with the input reference clock and does not exhibit any jitter or noise even at high clock frequency inputs.

  • Publication number: 20080081995
Abstract: Thermal strain imaging can be used to identify vascular plaques. Methods include heating and imaging with ultrasound to identify vulnerable plaques, which typically consist of a large lipid-rich core, in peripheral arteries of a patient. Lipid-bearing tissue has a negative temperature dependence of sound speed, whereas water-based tissue has a positive one, allowing thermal strain imaging to differentiate the two different types of tissues with high contrast to characterize plaque composition. Apparatus and methods of the present teachings allow noninvasive and reliable plaque identification.

  • Patent number: 7318804
Abstract: Methods and systems for measuring mechanical property of a vascular wall and a method and system for determining health of a vascular structure are provided wherein local deformation of a vessel wall resulting from physiologic pressures with altered transmural forces is measured. A non-invasive free-hand ultrasound scanning-procedure was performed to apply external force, comparable to the force generated in measuring a subject's blood pressure, to achieve higher strains by equalizing the internal arterial baseline pressure. When the applied pressure matched the internal baseline diastolic pressure, strain and strain rate increased by a factor of 10 over a cardiac cycle. Radial arterial strain was assessed in the vessel wall over the entire deformation procedure using a phase-sensitive, two-dimensional speckle-tracking algorithm. An elastic modulus reconstruction procedure was developed to estimate the non-linear elastic properties of the vascular wall.

  • Publication number: 20080007309
Abstract: An apparatus and method for generating phase related clocks, includes delaying a clock input by a cycle delay magnitude to generate a cycle delay signal and N delay taps is disclosed. Each delay tap has a delay equal to a fractional amount of the cycle delay magnitude. The method further includes delaying the clock input by an alignment magnitude to generate a first aligned phase signal and delaying each of the N delay taps by fractional amounts of the alignment magnitude to generate N phase aligned signals. A feedback loop is closed by a phase comparison between the first aligned phase signal and the cycle delay signal. The phase comparison result is used to adjust the cycle delay magnitude, which adjusts delays of the cycle delay signal and the N delay taps, and adjust the alignment magnitude, which adjusts delays of the first aligned phase signal and the N phase aligned signals.
