  • Publication number: 20090059414
Abstract: A hard disk drive with a head, and a disk that is rotated by a spindle motor. The drive includes a controller that operates in a low-speed idle mode where the spindle motor speed is reduced and the head is moved to a contact start-stop zone of the disk. Reducing the speed of the spindle motor, instead of spinning down the disk allows the disk drive to rapidly resume normal operation. Parking the head at a certain area of the disk, instead of a position off disk, allows the drive to more readily re-establish a mode where data can be retrieved or stored.

  • Patent number: 7158337
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for positioning a read/write head in a hard disk drive. The method comprises providing a disk having a at least one side with a plurality of tracks, where each of the tracks has a servo field with servo bits. The servo bits are read to provide a position signal for positioning a read/write head. The method determines a difference in position between an initial and a subsequent position of the read/write head on a track, where the subsequent location occurs after the read/write head has moved one revolution from the initial position on the track. The initial and subsequent positions are offset laterally. The method generates a compensation signal based on the initial position, the subsequent position and the difference. The position signal and the compensation signal are combined to provide a compensated position signal for positioning the read/write head. Various embodiments are described.

  • Patent number: 6724553
Abstract: A method for writing and reading data in a hard disk drive and compensating for an offset between a write element and a read element of a head. The method determines an offset time by determining the difference between a desired sync byte position and an actual sync byte position located between a preamble and a data sector of the disk. The difference corresponds to the offset between the read and write elements. The offset time is subtracted from the normal time for enabling the read gate of a disk drive pre-amplifier.

  • Patent number: 6441988
Abstract: A hard disk drive which moves a transducer across a disk surface so that the transducer has an essentially sinusoidal acceleration trajectory. The transducer may be integrated into a slider that is incorporated into a head gimbal assembly. The head gimbal assembly may be mounted to an actuator arm which can move the transducer across the disk surface. The movement of the actuator arm and the transducer may be controlled by a controller. The controller may move the transducer from a first track to a new track in accordance with a seek routine and a servo control routine. During the seek routine the controller may move the transducer in accordance with a sinusoidal acceleration trajectory. The sinusoidal trajectory may reduce the high harmonics found in square waveforms of the prior art, and thus minimize the acoustic noise of the head gimbal assembly and reduce the settling time of the transducer for reducing the duration of the seek routine.

  • Patent number: 6414811
Abstract: A method for setting a read bias current required for reading data written to a hard disk at an optimal bias current using a magneto-resistive (MR) head. The method for setting a read bias current includes the steps of: writing data to the hard disk in a predetermined frequency; reading data from the disk while varying a bias current value applied to the MR head; analyzing frequency characteristics of the read data; and selecting the bias current at which the read data has the best frequency characteristics, as the bias current of the MR head. In the method, the optimal read bias current is set within a short time through a fast Fourier transform (FFT), thereby reducing the processing time.
