Abstract: Wood pulp sheets treated with triacetin and other compounds, or solutions or emulsions of same, having increased softness while maintaining absorbency, and methods for producing same. More particularly, the invention relates to the treatment of wood pulp useful for making a fluff pulp using a softening agent including alkyl ethers or aryl ethers and esters of low molecular weight glycols, such as triacetin, propylene glycol diacetate and 2-phenoxyethanol.

Abstract: This invention relates generally to a method for extracting lignosulfonate for the manufacture of vanillin and other specialty chemicals. Specifically, the invention relates to a method for recovering lignosulfonates from newsprint comprising the steps of:a) converting newsprint to a crumb pulp comprising of from about 20% to about 50% crumb pulp fiber solids by weight on an oven dry basis and the remainder water;b) cooking the crumb pulp in a medium comprising crumb pulp and cooking acid solution selected from the group consisting of sodium bisulfite, magnesium bisulfite, ammonium bisulfite, calcium bisulfite or mixtures thereof wherein the weight ratio of cooking acid solution to the crumb pulp fiber is from about 3 to about 6 for sufficient time and sufficient temperature and pressure for lignosulfonate removal;c) separating the crumb pulp fiber from the spent sulfite liquor; andd) recovering the lignosulfonates from the spent sulfite liquor.

Abstract: A nitrite-oxidized base lignosulfonate and a method of making the same; the method comprises providing a base lignosulfonate material and oxidizing it in the presence of sodium nitrite under alkaline conditions at a temperature greater than about 100.degree. C.; useful products of same are dispersants for dyes and dispersants for setting materials e.g. gypsum.

Abstract: Highly reactive cellulose is prepared by mercerizing cellulosic material and reacting it with an hydroxyalkylating agent to a degree of substitution ranging from 0.05 to 0.3, said degree of substitution being short of rendering the cellulose appreciably soluble in water. The highly reactive cellulose is particularly useful for the preparation of such cellulose derivatives as cellulose acetate at considerably improved production levels.
