Publication number: 20180374716Abstract: A heat sink can be attached to a heat-producing electronic device by aligning an adhesive material to a surface of the heat sink, applying the adhesive material to the surface to form an outer perimeter and applying, within the outer perimeter, a thermally conductive material to the surface. The surface of the heat sink and a surface of the heat-producing electronic device can then be aligned, and the heat sink can be assembled to the heat-producing electronic device by bringing the heat-producing electronic device surface into contact with the adhesive material. The heat sink can then be affixed to the heat-producing electronic device by applying a compressive force to the assembly to activate the adhesive material.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 12, 2017Publication date: December 27, 2018Inventors: Karl Stathakis, Phillip V. Mann, Mark K. Hoffmeyer

Publication number: 20180073511Abstract: A cooling system that includes two or more fans that each have a chassis. The chassis includes a first face, a second face, and a sidewall. The fans then can be attached to each other by attaching a sidewall of a first fan chassis to a sidewall of a second fan chassis. An adjustable vane is attached perpendicularly and approximately equidistant between the fans, with an angular control element that is attached to the first fan chassis. The vane can be oriented such that the vane divides the airflow distributed to the fans. The vane then can be adjusted radially by the angular control element, which is attached to the fan chassis. If an impeller of a fan chassis fails the vane can be adjusted radially using an angular control element to distribute more airflow to the failed fan superimposing the non-failed fan chassis.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2017Publication date: March 15, 2018Inventors: William J. Anderl, Karl Stathakis

Patent number: 9726837Abstract: Light can be transmitted between a light source and a light detector or target by using at least two mating connector sections of a light pipe connector. A protrusion of one of the connector sections is designed to be received within a receptacle of another of the connector sections, which can make the light pipe connector mechanically compliant. The two connector sections are fabricated from an optically transmissive material, and have optically reflective surfaces in orthogonal orientations to optically transmissive surfaces adjacent to the light source and the light detector. When the protrusion of one of the connector sections is engaged within the receptacle of another connector section, light can be transmitted through optically transmissive surfaces adjacent to a light source and a light detector, while the orthogonally oriented optically reflective surfaces direct light towards the light detector.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2015Date of Patent: August 8, 2017Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Phillip V. Patent number: 9721855Abstract: A method for aligning a chip onto a substrate is disclosed. The method includes, depositing a ferrofluid, onto a substrate that has one or more pads that electrically couple to a semiconductor layer. The method can include a chip with solder balls electrically coupled to the logic elements of the chip, which can be placed onto the deposited ferrofluid, where the chip is supported on the ferrofluid, in a substantially coplanar orientation to the substrate. The method can include determining if the chip is misaligned from a desired location on the substrate. The method can include adjusting the current location of the chip in response to determining that the solder balls of the chip are misaligned from the desired location on the pads of the substrate, until the chip is aligned in the desired location.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2014Date of Patent: August 1, 2017Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Joseph Kuczynski, Phillip V.
