  • Patent number: 6752114
Abstract: A direct fuel injector is positioned to provide better fuel atomization within the combustion chamber. The direct fuel injector is disposed between an intake manifold and a cylinder head assembly thereby eliminating the need for additional fuel delivery conduits, thus decreasing the size of the engine and lowering the production costs of the outboard motor. The direct fuel injector position permits immediate air/fuel mixture adjustments allowing improved acceleration enrichment and lean stratified charge operation. The direct fuel injector position and routing of induction system components allows for compact placement of auxiliary components. The integrated direct fuel injector position enables the operator to enjoy compact engine design, improved engine performance and increased fuel efficiency.

  • Publication number: 20040094123
Abstract: An engine includes a throttling device configured for both mechanical and electrical control. For example, the throttling device can include a throttle cable connection assembly configured to allow a throttle valve shaft of the throttling device to be controlled by movement of throttle cables and an electronic control section configured to allow the throttle valve to be moved by an electronic actuator. The throttling device can include a connector member configured to selectively engage and disengage the mechanical control section from the throttle valve shaft so as to allow the electrical control section to adjust the throttle valve shaft without resistance from the mechanical control section. The engine can also include a switch for indicating to an electronic controller whether or not the mechanical control section is engaged with a throttle valve shaft.

  • Publication number: 20040082235
Abstract: A marine drive has a propulsion device. A transmission is coupled with the propulsion device. A shift mechanism moves the transmission between a first position in which the propulsion device is set to a first mode and a second position in which the propulsion device is set to a second mode. The shift mechanism has a shift unit movable between a first shift position and a second shift position. The transmission moves to the first position while the shift unit moves toward the first shift position, and moves to the second position while the shift unit moves toward the second shift position. An electrically operable shift actuator is supported by the drive body. The shift actuator has an actuating member that preferably is detachably coupled with the shift unit.

  • Publication number: 20030056502
Abstract: An exhaust system for an internal combustion engine of an outboard motor is provided. The exhaust system provides dual exhaust passages, simplifying the engine's construction and reducing manufacturing costs, while optimizing engine performance. The exhaust system includes exhaust ports having equal lengths that avoid differential pressure losses across cylinders. • Patent number: 6253729
Abstract: A direct injected, internal combustion engine combustion chamber configuration that employs a shrouded arrangement for the intake valve seat so as to generate a tumble motion under at least some running conditions. This is accomplished by a shrouding of the intake valve in such a way that the flow direction effects a tumbling motion and also so that the air flow does not adversely affect the flow from the injector nozzle.

  • Patent number: 6053135
Abstract: A number of embodiments of variable valve actuating systems wherein the valve is operated selectively by either first or second rocker arms both of which are supported for pivotal movement on the same rocker arm shaft but which are operated by different cams and have different lifts. Only one of the rocker arms directly operates the valve. The lift is changed by selectively coupling the rocker arms for simultaneous operation. A number of variations in locations and valve actuation are disclosed as well as a variable induction system that cooperates with the variable valve actuation to improve the engine performance over a wider range of speeds and loads. The coupling between the rocker arms includes a replaceable adjusting shim.
