  • Publication number: 20030074921
Abstract: Provided are a method for producing a glass suitable for an information recording medium required to have high qualities, a process for the production of a glass substrate blank from the above glass and a process for the production of a glass substrate from the above blank. The method is for the production of a glass containing an alkali metal element by melting a glass material in a glass melting apparatus and uses, as said melting apparatus, a melting apparatus whose glass-contact portion is made of a material containing zirconium and containing substantially no alkali metal element. In the process for the production of a glass substrate blank, the glass obtained by the above method is press-molded or is subjected to a float process, and in the process for the production of a glass substrate, the above glass substrate blank is lapped and polished.

  • Publication number: 20020023465
Abstract: A process for producing a high-quality glass from highly reactive raw materials and a glass-melting apparatus for use therewith, comprising the step of charging a material for the glass to a molten glass in a heated vessel, (1) wherein an oxidizing gas is bubbled in the molten glass and a glass raw material that behaves as a reducing agent during being melted is charged into a position of the bubbling or (2) said vessel is filled with a dry ambient gas and while the ambient gas is allowed to flow to a liquid surface of the molten glass along an charging route of the glass raw material, the glass raw material is charged.

  • Patent number: 4983198
Abstract: In a method of and an apparatus for melting glass having high reducing activity when melted, a glass raw material charged into a melting vessel having a wall formed of platinum or alloy thereof is heated and melted. Oxygen gas is supplied to an outer surface of the melting vessel to raise oxygen partial pressure within an atmosphere surrounding the melting vessel. The oxygen gas is caused to penetrate through the wall of the melting vessel, thereby supplying the penentrated oxygen to a layer of the molten glass which is in contact with an inner surface of the wall of the melting vessel, so that the layer of the molten glass is formed into a protective glass layer rich in oxygen, for protecting the wall of the melting vessel from the molten glass.
