Patent number: 8046166Abstract: Traffic information, including traffic flow information and traffic incident information, obtained through a traffic management system for providing and facilitating the exchange of traffic information between a remote location and a vehicle may be presented to a user on a user display in the vehicle. The traffic information may be presented to the user in several circumstances, either as cued by the user, or automatically presented by the traffic management system. The user display may also automatically display traffic flow and traffic incident information for the direction that the user is traveling or along a route calculated by the navigation device. Further, a window displaying information about an upcoming traffic incident such as distance to the incident and incident details may automatically appear in the user display. Alternately, the user may select a roadway, freeway, or area for which traffic information is desired.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2010Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Cesar Cabral, Maja Kurciska, Eric Shigeru Ohki, Kazuya Tamura, Robert Uyeki, Hiromitsu Yuhara

Patent number: 8041779Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and method that includes a vehicle that exchanges information with the remote location by way of a communication network. A remote server transmits vehicle-related information to the vehicle by way of a communication system. Information may also be broadcast to and received by the vehicle by way of a broadcast communication system. A receiver of the vehicle provides user access to only a subset of the broadcast information based on user preferences of a user profile. The user may update the user profile by accessing and updating it at either the vehicle or by accessing a database. The user may access the database through a network, such as the Internet. The vehicle also selectively transmits vehicle-related information to the remote location when a predetermined event occurs. The vehicle-related information is compiled and analyzed at the remote location, and the analyzed information is transmitted back to the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2003Date of Patent: October 18, 2011Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masayuki Habaguchi, Hiromitsu Yuhara, Tsuneo Ohno, Kazuya Tamura, Jamie Clough, Rich Shannon, Jon Okino, John Gusiff, Daya Appa

Patent number: 8005609Abstract: Traffic information, including flow information and incident information, obtained through a traffic management system for providing and facilitating the exchange of traffic information between a remote location and a vehicle may be used in route calculation by a navigation device. The navigation device may recalculate a route based on anticipated user error. Alternatively, the navigation device may recalculate a route using received traffic information triggered by the receipt of a traffic information update, or triggered by the passage of an amount of time. The broadcast rate of traffic information updates may vary temporally (providing more frequent updates during peak commute times) or geographically (providing more frequent updates to metropolitan areas with increased traffic information needs). If route calculation is triggered by an elapsed amount of time, the amount of time may vary to be shorter during peak commute times.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2011Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Robert Uyeki, Kazuya Tamura, Eric Shigeru Ohki, Maja Kurciska

Patent number: 7849149Abstract: The present invention comprises a message portal for administering and controlling the exchange of vehicle-related messages between a remote location and a vehicle and a method thereof. In one embodiment, the message portal receives a message from the remote location and determines when the message should be broadcast to a vehicle. The priority of the message is determined by several variables—all which may be updated and/or customized by a user through a user interface. The message portal and method can also automatically relay a vehicle fault message to a remote location, which then analyzes the fault and sends a response message back to the driver.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2005Date of Patent: December 7, 2010Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masayuki Habaguchi, Hiromitsu Yuhara, Tsuneo Ono, Kazuya Tamura, Jamie Marie Clough, Richard C. Patent number: 7671764Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for selectively using traffic flow data to provide routing options for a vehicle traveling to a destination point. There is provided a method comprising setting a threshold traffic flow data availability level, receiving traffic flow data from traffic flow sensors placed along one or more routes to the destination point, and determining whether the traffic flow data for each route meets the threshold availability level. The method further comprises enabling a flow-based route guidance for those routes for which the traffic flow data meets the threshold availability level. In one embodiment, the flow-based route guidance comprises utilizing the traffic flow data to calculate an estimated time of arrival at the destination point along each route.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2007Date of Patent: March 2, 2010Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Robert Uyeki, Kazuya Tamura, Eric Shigeru Ohki, Maja Kurciska
