  • Patent number: 4926985
Abstract: An oscillating apparatus comprises a cylinder, a piston reciprocatingly movably fitted in the cylinder, shaft members connected to the piston and extending out of the cylinder. The cylinder, piston and shaft members form an oscillator. An inlet and an outlet for an electro-rheological fluid are provided at each of two cylinder chambers defined in said cylinder by the piston. The apparatus further comprises voltage applying devices for applying electric voltage to the electro-rheological fluid passing through the inlets and outlets, respectively, so that applications of the voltage to the inlet of one cylinder chamber and the outlet of the other cylinder chamber are simultaneously effected and applications of the voltage to the inlets of both the cylinder chambers are alternately effected.

  • Patent number: 4840251
Abstract: A noise reducing apparatus in the form of a hollow body comprising two or more passage groups consisting of a plurality of passages. The length of each passage is determined such that the sound waves emitted from the passages of the adjacent passage groups form plane waves which are shifted by a half wavelength so that plane waves interfere each other. The apparatus can be secured to an opening of construction and reduce the level of sound pressure from a sound source without any closed shield construction surrounding the sound source.

  • Patent number: 4753318
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an engine noise control device for use in automobiles or the like comprising a noise control member which is attached to an opening of an engine room of an automobile or the like. The noise control member has a plurality of hollow conduit passages penetrating from one of surfaces to the other surface thereof. The hollow conduit passages are so arranged that the length of the conduit passages becomes shorter from the central portion to the peripheral portion of the noise control member. Thereby, a noise-propagating direction is changed by controlling the noise to reduce the energy of sounds radiated and/or diffracted to the outside.

  • Patent number: 4605091
Abstract: A sound insulating apparatus. Heretofore, the sound insulating apparatus to be installed in a ventilator, etc. of an architecture requires a long duct, and becomes large in its size and heavy in its weight, and is not sufficient in its sound absorbing performance. The sound insulating apparatus according to the present invention comprises a closed container including a first opening and a second opening, and having a sound absorbing member at its internal surface. The first opening is provided with a sound converging means for converging a sound wave coming into the closed container through the first opening to a predetermined place within the closed container. • Patent number: 4509061
Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming a photographic record representing acoustic characteristics of a sound field such as the distribution of sound pressure and the distribution of equiphase surface wave are disclosed. A microphone and a light emitting diode are reciprocally moved to scan a plane in the sound field and an envelope signal of an output signal from the microphone is derived. The envelope signal is then sampled at a given sampling frequency to produce a sample signal. A carrier having a given frequency is amplitude-modulated with the sample signal to derive a modulated signal. Then, a switching circuit is controlled by the modulated signal in such a manner that when the envelope signal exceeds a predetermined value, the switching circuit is made on and off repeatedly and thus the light emitting diode is turned on and off at a rate of the carrier frequency to form a locas of the light spot. An image of the locus of the light spot is recorded optically on a photographic film.

  • Patent number: 4436179
Abstract: A noise control apparatus for reducing a sound volume of a noise propagating from a noise source such as a railroad includes a sound arresting wall placed apart from the noise source. Means for shifting in phase and refracting the acoustic wave of the noise is disposed at substantially the top of the noise arresting wall. The above means, for example, has a plurality of passageways extending substantially along the propagating direction of the acoustic wave of the noise and the length of the passageways varies. Through the above means, a part of the acoustic wave from the noise source is refracted and the phase thereof is shifted to be a refracted propagating sound, which thereafter interferes with the other part of the acoustic wave directly from the noise source to thereby reduce a sound volume to a great extent.

  • Patent number: 4158401
Abstract: A device for controlling a propagation direction of noise, which is preferably associated with a sound insulating wall to significantly improve its sound reducing effect of alleviating noise emitted from a noise source such as a railroad, highway and the like on which an electric car and automobiles run. The device comprises a hollow structural body composed of a plurality of elongated vertical hollow passages arranged at right angles to a substrate and spaced apart from each other by means of partition walls. The upper noise inlet side surface of the hollow passages face a propagation direction of noise emitted from the noise source and serve to refract and lag in phase the noise passed therethrough, thereby producing a sound reducing region located intermediate between a direct sound propagation and the refracted sound propagation. In one embodiment, a pair of hollow structural bodies are arranged in opposition to each other to form an arch type device.
