A request is received to replicate a source volume from a source node to a target node so as to generate the initial copy of the source volume in the target node. With respect to a current source data block of at least one source data block contained in the source volume, a search in the target node is performed for a target data block corresponding to the current source data block. Responsive to identifying the target data block, the initial copy of the source volume in the target node is updated using the target data block with the information from the current source data block.
