  • Patent number: 5945742
Abstract: A starter has a motor, output shaft driven by the motor, a pinion moving body mounted on the output shaft and engageable with a ring gear, an electromagnet switch, and a rotation restricting member driven by the electromagnet switch to engage and restrict rotation of the pinion moving body until engagement of a pinion gear with the ring gear. To protect the pinion rotation restricting member, continued engagement of the rotation restricting member with the pinion moving body is released by a guide when the pinion moving body rotates a predetermined angle. Further, to protect the pinion moving body, the pinion moving body is advanced closely to the ring gear and thereafter the motor is allowed to rotate so that the pinion engages the ring gear at low rotation speeds.

  • Patent number: 5907204
Abstract: In a starter, a power supply terminal connected to a solenoid coil of a magnet switch and connectable to a starter external circuit is provided on an end cover. The power supply terminal includes a terminal metal member, a bimetal which interrupts electric conduction between the solenoid coil and the terminal metal member at the time of temperature rise above a predetermined temperature, and a casing contacting a foot part of the terminal metal member and encasing the bimetal therein. The bimetal responds to each of the excessive heating of the terminal metal member and excessive energization current to interrupt the conduction. In case of a single axis-type starter, the power supply terminal is provided on a recess so that the terminal metal member does not extend axially beyond the rear end face of the end cover.

  • Patent number: 5905309
Abstract: In a starter having a planetary gear reduction mechanism and a shock absorbing device, a first friction plate of the shock absorbing device is engaged with an internal gear of the reduction mechanism to restrict the internal gear from rotating. A space is provided radially between the internal gear and a housing to allow rotation of the internal gear upon application of an impact shock. A cylindrical member which is harder than the housing is disposed between the space relatively movably against the housing and the internal gear so that the internal gear is restricted from directly contacting the housing.

  • Patent number: 5892421
Abstract: A rotation restricting member made of a resilient body such as a leaf spring is driven by a magnet switch upon energization of a motor and engages engaging grooves formed on an outer peripheral surface of an outer portion of a one-way clutch so that the rotation restricting member restricts rotation of the one-way clutch. The motor has first and second field coils connected in parallel. The first field coil is connected to an exciting coil in the magnet switch in series and the second field coil is connected to a motor contact in the magnet switch in series. When a starter switch is actuated, only the first field coil is actuated first with low voltage. Then, the motor contact is closed and the second field coil is actuated also so that the motor rotates at a high speed with full voltage.

  • Patent number: 5875677
Abstract: A starter for an engine, having a ring gear includes an output shaft for slidably holding a pinion gear engageable with the ring gear, a housing having an opening portion that enables the pinion gear to engage with the ring gear when the pinion gear advances, a cover having a shutter, a front wall and a side wall for sliding together with the pinion gear. The shutter opens the opening portion when the pinion gear advances and shuts the most part of the opening portion when the pinion gear retracts. The front wall is provided to cover at least half of a front portion, which faces to the ring gear, of the pinion gear. The side wall is extended from the front wall in a direction parallel to an axis of the output shaft to cover at least half of the gear tooth periphery in a circumferential direction of the pinion gear. When water carried by the rotating ring gear comes to the opening portion when the pinion gear rotates with the ring gear, most of such water is blocked by the gear tooth.

  • Patent number: 5861691
Abstract: In a starter having a motor yoke, a housing and an end frame forming a cylindrical starter frame, a cylindrical thermal insulation cover is fitted around the starter frame through rubber-made elastic rings. The rings are tightly fitted in V-shaped grooves formed circumferentially on fitting faces, one being between the housing and the yoke and the other being between the yoke and the end frame. Each ring is pressed radially inward by a large diameter part of the thermal insulation cover to fill in the V-shaped groove and contact the fitting face. Further, in a motor for the starter, a resilient plate sheet is disposed between a commutator and a brush holder to return a brush passing therethrough to the original position when the brush tends to move during sliding contact with the commutator.

  • Patent number: 5857380
Abstract: To reduce the size of a starter for installing it in a smaller engine compartment, the rotational speed of the starter motor has to be high and it is reduced to a certain speed through a reduction device to obtain a higher torque. To realize a high reduction ratio in a small planetary gear reduction device, an impact force imposed on the device at an instant a starter pinion engages with a engine ring gear and repeating impacts during a cranking period must be reduced. As a coupling between an internal gear and a housing of the reduction device, a flexible or a resilient coupling is disclosed herein. The flexible or resilient coupling relieves an excessive impact force at the engagement by permitting rotation of the internal gear relative to the housing, and reduces noise caused by the cranking impacts by permitting a small vibrating move of the internal gear. The flexible coupling is realized by a combination of a bumpy surface and projections coupled thereto.

  • Patent number: 5819583
Abstract: In a one-way clutch used in a starter for engines, a locking concave for locking a roller thereto is formed on a roller-moving surface of one clutch member having a peripheral surface facing a peripheral surface of the other clutch member having a wedge-shaped groove for accommodating the roller. A resilient member for disengaging the roller from the locking concave at the time of overrunning is accommodated in an annular groove, thus urging the roller radially outwardly. The roller is prevented from colliding with the locking concave at the time of overrunning so that vibrations and noise are not generated.

  • Patent number: 5670754
Abstract: A digitizer and a method for calculating the position coordinates indicated by a position indicator on a tablet. The position indicator has a coil that electromagnetically interacts with the loop coil group of the tablet. A signal detection unit, a "sum" signal specifying unit, and a coordinate determination unit are utilized. The signal detection unit sequentially selects two loop coils as a loop coil pair from the loop coil group of the tablet and acquires a "sum" of and a "difference" between signals generated in respective coils of each loop coil pair. The "sum" signal specifying unit specifies one of the loop coil pairs of the loop coil group which generates a "sum" signal of a maximum absolute value when the coil of the position indicator and the loop coil group of the tablet are brought into an interaction state. The coordinate determination unit determines position coordinates on the tablet designated by the position indicator, on the basis of a "difference" signal of the specified loop coil pair.

  • Patent number: 5414226
Abstract: In this digitizer, when the coil of the position indicator is placed near a plurality of conductors of the tablet, an oscillator arrangement is formed through the amplifier, and a position indicated by the position indicator is determined by detecting magnetic fields generated by the position indicator when the oscillator arrangement oscillates. In addition, when the position indicator is placed near the tablet, an oscillator arrangement is constituted by the position indicator and two conductors of the tablet at a timing at which the position of the position indicator is measured.
