  • Publication number: 20060164639
Abstract: A spectral-domain optical coherence tomography system using a cross-dispersed spectrometer is disclosed. The interfered optical signal is dispersed by a grating into several orders of diffraction, and these orders of diffraction are separated by an additional dispersive optical element. The spectral interferogram is recorded by a set of linear detector arrays, or by a two-dimensional detector array.

  • Publication number: 20040249620
Abstract: An epistemic engine system and methods are provided, which accept biological data from experiments or other sources, and automatically produce a model, such as a genomic and protein interaction network, which attempts to explain the operation of a biological system. The system and methods identify interrelationships among components of a biological system, consistent with the biological data and other life science knowledge. In preferred embodiments, evolutionary algorithms are used, in combination with information from a life science knowledge base and experimental data, to generate models that may identify these interrelationships. The output of an epistemic engine permits scientists to better understand biological systems, to propose hypotheses, to build more complete models, and to propose new experiments to test the validity of their hypotheses.

  • Patent number: 6823526
Abstract: A system for connecting an external device and a host system includes an input/output code element on a host system linked with the external device. The input/output code element generates a device identification string. The device identification string includes an optional feature component associated with the external device. The optional feature component indicates at least one extra feature that is included with a particular external device, such as an envelope feeder for a printer or an audio component for a wireless Internet appliance. The system further includes an installer linked with the host system. The installer receives the device identification string and parses the string for the optional feature component. • Patent number: 6803239
Abstract: A multi-slide assembly includes various components that alone or in combination facilitate testing of test samples with minimal manipulation of assay components. Moreover, the various device components permit centrifugation, culturing and analysis of each test sample to be performed in the same assembly. A frame retains a plurality of reaction vessel assemblies between a pair of opposing channels that are configured to slidably receive the opposing ends of each reaction vessel assembly. A strip cap seals the openings in each reaction vessel using cap members having sealing rings circumscribing the external walls thereof to form compression seals with internal walls of the reaction vessels. Furthermore, in a method of making a multi-well slide assembly, an ultrasonic welding process removably bonds a plurality of wells to a slide plate to provide an adequate seal therebetween during centrifugation, yet still enable separation thereof by an operator.

  • Patent number: 6679042
Abstract: A wide pickup header on the baler picks up windrows that are signficantly wider than the centrally disposed inlet of a passage containing cutter apparatus that reduces the materials into smaller pieces for compaction into a bale. In order to provide smooth, even, continuous flow of crop materials into and through the cutter apparatus at the inlet, the pickup is provided with a pair of lower, upturning stub augers on opposite sides of the inlet and a full length, downturning top auger spaced above and somewhat forwardly of the stub augers. The top auger not only assists the stub augers in consolidating the wide windrow of materials in toward the center of the machine but also keeps the stream fairly low and concentrated at a level where the stream is readily accepted by the rotary cutter apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20030132552
Abstract: A system for controlling the manufacture of dimensionally varying tubular members extrudes a continuous tube with a lumen from an extrusion machine. The extrusion machine has a melt pump, which regulates the flow rate of the melt through the extrusion head. The extrusion head forms a melt flow and introduces air pressure within the melt flow to form the lumen of the tubing. An air pressure regulator controls the pressure of the air introduced through the extrusion head. A puller supplies tension to the tubing as it is extruded through the extrusion head. The system uses a diameter gage and/or a wall thickness gage to measure the change in the wall thickness of the tubing as a function of its length. Further, the system uses a laser to gage the profile of the tubing.

  • Patent number: 6566855
Abstract: A device measures current magnitude in a conductor coupled to an electrical device and generates a signal comprising a series of pulses having a frequency. The frequency of the series of pulses is responsive to the magnitude of current measured. The device comprises a sensor magnetically linked with the conductor connected to the electrical device. The sensor produces an analog signal in response to the presence of a current within the conductor. A signal conditioner is located proximate to the sensor and is electrically coupled to the sensor so as to receive the analog signal. The signal conditioner produces, in response to the analog signal, a first signal representative of a magnitude of the current. A converter receives and converts the first signal into an output signal that comprises a series of pulses having a frequency. The frequency of the series of pulses is responsive to the magnitude of the current. All the sensor, the signal conditioner, and the converter are located in a single unitary package.

  • Publication number: 20020176648
Abstract: A localized and distributive optical switching control system is separated into three localized systems: a sensor system, a processor system, and a position driver system. The sensor system detects the light transmission efficiency from the input port to the output port, and sends an error signal to the processor system; the processor system processes the error signal and, based upon predefined compensators and control algorithms, generates a control output signal to rectify the error to the sending and/or receiving position driver(s); the position driver(s) receives the control output signal then repositions the sending and/or receiving mirror(s) to the desired position for optimum signal transmission. The amount of communication data and the amount of routing paths between components are reduced, thus decreasing system reaction time and heat generated, allowing controls to be installed on smaller circuits, such as ASIC, and the arrays to be placed closer together.

  • Patent number: 5872531
Abstract: An electronic method and apparatus for signal encoding and decoding to provide ultra low distortion reproduction of analog signals, while remaining compatible with industry standardized signal playback apparatus not incorporating the decoding features of the invention, and wherein the improved system provides an interplay of gain, slew rate and wave synthesis operations to reduce signal distortions and improve apparent resolution, all under the control of concealed control codes for triggering appropriate decoding signal reconstruction compensation complementing the signal analysis made during encoding. In addition, signals lacking the encoding process features of the invention are likewise compatible with playback decoders which do embody the invention, to provide some overall restoration enhancement.
