  • Patent number: 4505546
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device is disclosed in which a liquid crystal material mixed with a dichroic dye is held between a pair of substrates whose facing surfaces are provided with electrodes, so that a picture element is made up of a pair of facing portions of the electrodes and a portion of the liquid crystal material sandwiched by the facing portions, in which a reflecting plate is adjacent to one of the substrates, and in which at least one of the substrates is formed of a birefringent material having slow and fast principal axes of birefringence. In the above device, an angle between the direction of the absorption axis of the dichroic dye and one of the principal axes of birefringence of the substrate is selected so that the contrast and viewing-direction characteristic of the device can be improved.

  • Patent number: 4494825
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device, wherein a fill port for inserting a liquid crystal composition thereinto is sealed by using a photo-setting resin composition comprising an acrylic or methacrylic type resin as a major resin component and two or more photosensitizers different in quality, is excellent in reliability and the sealed portion of the fill port can sufficiently and uniformly be cured both in surface and inner portions by irradiation of light in a short time.

  • Patent number: 4458987
Abstract: A multi-layer liquid crystal panel for a liquid crystal display device having stacked light transmitting substrates of different sizes is disclosed. A retainer is disposed at a position directly beneath a sealing member which seals a first substrate and a second substrate, between the second substrate and a third substrate. The retainer is applied to the substrates simultaneously with the application of the sealing member. The first, second and third substrates are stacked one on the other and pressed to form a multi-layer panel. By virtue of the retainer, the gaps between the respective substrates are maintained uniform over the display area.

  • Patent number: 4455185
Abstract: A method of manufacturing liquid crystal display element by a multi-element process is disclosed. Two substrates of plastic film provided with electrodes in individual element sections are put together such that the electrodes on these plastic films are in register with one another, liquid crystal is sealed in a space between the substrates which is defined in respect of the individual element sections by a seal member in the form of a closed configuration and the substrates are cut to obtain individual liquid crystal display elements separated from one another. One of the substrates is formed with cuts in the neighborhood of the outer wall of the seal members before putting together the substrates.

  • Patent number: 4364168
Abstract: A pair of substrates each provided with an electrode film are adhered to each other at their peripheral portions through a sealing material to form an envelope. A liquid crystal material is injected into the envelope from a liquid crystal material injection port which is provided in a localized part of the sealing material. Then, the envelope is heated to a temperature higher than the normal room temperature, and a photosensitive curing adhesive is applied to the injection port while maintaining the envelope at the elevated temperature. After the application of the adhesive, the envelope is cooled to a temperature in the vicinity of the normal room temperature. Subsequently, the adhesive is hardened through irradiation of light at a temperature in the vicinity of the normal room temperature to hermetically seal the injection port, thereby finishing a liquid crystal display cell.
