  • Patent number: 9253727
Abstract: A method, of operating an end node to wirelessly communicate with a central node, includes: receiving wirelessly a current instance of a beacon signal periodically-transmitted from the central node; measuring a received power, PB-RX, of the beacon signal; reading locally-stored values of PB-TX and G representing a presumed transmitted power of the beacon signal and a performance goal of the end node, respectively; determining, for a given channel, a path loss, PL, based on the PB-RX and the PB-TX; and adaptively setting an energy level, EN-TX, of a forthcoming message to be transmitted from the end node based on PL and G.

  • Publication number: 20090017872
Abstract: A display system for an electronic device includes a first sub-display and a second sub-display in signal communication with the first sub-display. The sub-displays together may display related information within a given category, such as time, weather, messages, etc. The display system also may include a navigation mechanism that permits the user to navigate through and select data items from at least one of the first or second sub-displays. In response to a data selection, at least one of the sub-displays alters its view such that the sub-displays together may display a new dataset of related information within the given category. The navigation mechanism also may be used to toggle through various additional categories of information. In an exemplary embodiment, the display system may be the external display of a clamshell mobile telephone in the closed position.

  • Publication number: 20090009479
Abstract: A mobile device comprises a key switch and a graphic display region associated with the key switch. A display control application drives, on a predetermined alternation time schedule between a first time period and a second time period: i) display of a first icon on the graphic display region during the first time period when activation of the key switch activates a first mobile device function; and ii) display a second icon, different than the first icon, on the graphic display region during the second time period when activation of the key switch activates a second mobile device function.

  • Patent number: 6219717
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing object-transparent invocation operates in conjunction with a data processing system having a memory, a sender and at least one method capable of performing a function to advantageously deliver a message to the at least one method capable of performing a function, thereby (i) delivering the message without requiring the sender to have specific knowledge of the identity, address, name or existence of the at least one method capable of servicing the message, (ii) delivering the message to the at least one method capable of servicing the message, and/or (iii) delivering the message to the at least one method capable of servicing the message, without the use of identity, address or name information provided by the sender.

  • Patent number: 6009166
Abstract: A hookswitch actuator including an activating mechanism which maintains the hookswitch circuit of a telephone in an "on hook" state when the activating mechanism is in a first position, or in an "off hook" state when the activating mechanism is in the second position. The movement of the activating mechanism between the two positions is accomplished through the use of a shape memory alloy mechanism. The shape memory alloy mechanism is coupled to the activating mechanism in such a way that heating or cooling of the shape memory alloy mechanism moves the activating mechanism between its two positions. Control of the heating and cooling of the shape memory alloy mechanism is effectuated by controlling the amount of electric current passing through it.

  • Patent number: 4773663
Abstract: A recumbent bicycle is powered by the driving of a crank spindle that rotates on an axis generally coincident with that of the front wheel. The crank spindle is disposed within a spindle housing supported from the front of the bicycle frame, and the spindle housing supports the front wheel through a steerably turnable intermediate hub. Steering of the handlebars causes the front wheel to turn to steer the bicycle, while the crank spindle remains in a fixed orientation to the frame so that the bicycle can be continuously driven with pedals connected to the crank spindle, which in turn is connected to the rear wheel through a sprocket and drive chain assembly.
