  • Patent number: 8355482
Abstract: It is desirable to achieve a co-incident investigative kV source for a therapeutic MV source—a so-called “beams-eye-view” source. It has been suggested that bremsstrahlung radiation from an electron window be employed; we propose a practical structure for achieving this which can switch easily between a therapeutic beam and a beam-eye-view diagnostic beam capable of offering good image resolution. Such a radiation source comprises an electron gun, a pair of targets locatable in the path of a beam produced by the electron gun, one target of the pair being of a material with a lower atomic number than the other, and an electron absorber insertable into and withdrawable from the path of the beam. In a preferred form, the electron gun is within a vacuum chamber, and the pair of targets are located at a boundary of the vacuum chamber. The lower atomic number target can be Nickel and the higher atomic number target Copper and/or Tungsten.

  • Patent number: 8353008
Abstract: A device, system, and method are directed towards facilitating a registration of a user for a network service. In one embodiment, a server receives, from a user at a client device, user information including at least one text block. The server analyzes the text block to determine an authenticity value of the user information. The analysis may be based on the length of a lexicon of the text block, the size of a word such as the longest word in the text block, or the number of clauses in the text block. The analysis may be further based on expected values determined by such values in authentic text blocks of a similar nature. Based on the authenticity value, the system may allow the user to access the network service, disallow access to the network, allow conditional access, queue the registration application for further review, or take other actions.

  • Publication number: 20120224582
Abstract: An Ethernet network comprising multi-rate link partners that may be operable to communicate symmetrically and/or asymmetrically via any of a plurality of channels. The multi-rate link partners may monitor one or more factors that may affect their power consumption and/or energy efficiency. During operation, an uplink and/or downlink communication rate may be configured, based on the monitoring, to enable asymmetrical data rate operation. The monitored factors may comprise prior or current data rates, bit error rate, packet error rate, latency, queued data and/or tasks, for example. The multi-rate link partners may comprise a twisted pair PHY, an optical PHY or a backplane PHY. In order to reduce power consumption and/or improve energy efficiency, one or more of the uplink communication rate and/or the downlink communication rate may be lowered. The power consumption may be reduced for a multi-rate PHY, a host computer and/or a MAC controller.

  • Publication number: 20120215051
Abstract: The ability to provide a fine resolution variation in the dose rate of radiotherapeutic apparatus would allow delivery times of VMAT and related techniques to be reduced significantly. A radiotherapeutic apparatus is described, comprising a source of radiation able to issue pulses of radiation at a base frequency, and a control apparatus arranged to permit pulses provided these match a pulse pattern chosen to achieve a selected time-averaged power level, the chosen pulse pattern being one selected from a plurality of pulse patterns that include patterns consisting of trains of pulses that include, relative to the base frequency, at least every nth and every mth pulse where n?m and the nth and mth pulses are non-coincident. Essentially, such an apparatus issues a pulse if it is the nth or the mth or the kth (etc) where n, m, k . . . are selectable independently.

  • Publication number: 20120166941
Abstract: A content generation system may allow for extensions that can modify or influence the content that is being generated, while allowing the extensions to run separately from the base content generator. In one example, a processing engine converts raw data into presentable content (e.g., HTML content that is visually-presentable on a high-quality web site). The processing engine may be extensible in the sense that it may allow extension components to interact with the processing engine, or to modify the output of the processing engine, in order to influence the nature of the generated content. For example, if the processing engine uses certain parameters to produce a banner, then an extension may cause the banner to be rotated, re-sized, re-colored, etc. The extension may execute in an isolated space, thereby allowing code of arbitrary provenance to execute without destabilizing the processing engine or the server on which the processing engine runs.

  • Patent number: 8139718
Abstract: Realtime beam shape adjustment in response to (for example) online CT scanning of a patient during treatment is assisted by the radiotherapy apparatus comprising a source adapted to emit a beam of therapeutic radiation, a collimator for delimiting the radiation beam, the collimator comprising a plurality of leaves arranged alongside each other and be moveable longitudinally so that the tips of the leaves define a variable edge of the collimator, the leaves being mounted on a support that is moveable laterally with respect to the leaves. In this way, movements of the tumor that are perpendicular to the direction of leaf motion can be accommodated by simply moving the collimator bodily so as to accommodate this. It is preferred that the apparatus also includes a control means adapted to receive information as to the location of the target volume, and, on the basis of that information, control the longitudinal positions of the leaves and the lateral position of the support.

  • Publication number: 20120051515
Abstract: An approach to radiotherapy is disclosed which allows the therapeutic beam to be more accurately directed towards a target region. Instead of stopping acquiring images during treatment, the system continues to acquire images as treatment is ongoing. This ongoing pipeline of images is used to update the previously created 3D reconstructions of each breathing phase. Thus the position of the target region can also be updated. The surrogate is recorded simultaneously with the image acquisition although it is not used to determine the breathing phase. As new images are used to update the 3D reconstructions of each breathing phase the values of the surrogate associated with that phase are also updated. This means that the correlation with the surrogate can also continue to be evaluated, and the correlation refined, thus improving the ability of the system to track the motion of the target.

  • Publication number: 20110319741
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method of pre-approving a range of hypothetical spatial variations of the target whilst an initial treatment plan is generated. This allows the treatment plan to be later adapted to account for spatial variations of the target region falling within those pre-approved ranges, without going through time-consuming steps of quality assurance on the adapted plan.

  • Patent number: 8059782
Abstract: The present invention seeks to provide a radiotherapeutic apparatus that mitigates the various problems found in the techniques such as tomotherapy, IMAT, IMRT and the like. It provides a radiotherapeutic apparatus comprising a source of radiation whose output is collimated by a multi-leaf collimator, and a patient support, the source being rotatable around the support and the support being translatable along the axis of rotation, thereby to move the source helically relative to a patient on the support. The leaves of the MLC are preferably oriented orthogonal to the axis of rotation, to simplify computation of the dose distribution. The apparatus thus moves the patient on the patient support system along the axis of rotation, in the longitudinal direction. Thus, the device has an effectively unlimited treatable volume in the longitudinal direction and avoids the limitations of IMAT and IMRT techniques whilst enabling the use of thin MLC leaves to give a high longitudinal resolution.
