Abstract: A system for the transaction of transactional amounts when using merchantable content on a medium includes a clearinghouse, an apparatus having a medium handier, a merchantable content receiver, a medium identifier, a content identifier, a medium use mechanism, and a transmitter. The medium handler accepts the medium and the merchantable content receiver accepts the merchantable content. The medium identifier reads a first identifier from the medium. The content identifier reads a second identifier from the merchantable content. The medium use mechanism incorporates and uses the merchantable content with the medium. The transmitter sends the first and second identifiers to the clearinghouse. The clearinghouse has a first account for a medium provider referenced by the first identifier and a second account for the content provider referenced by the second identifier.

Abstract: A system and related methods for automatically identifying media type in a printing device media tray is presented. The system comprises a controller, and an optical sensor, communicatively coupled to the controller, wherein the sensor is positioned to locate and identify a code containing media type information from a next available piece of print media, and to generate a signal to the controller based, at least in part, on the identified code.

Soft keys or other input mechanisms can be used to toggle the solicitation and display of additional advertising information if necessary. Large amounts of information, or local information of interest to a PDA user can be sent in real time or hot linked into the PDA for consumption by the PDA user at a later time.

Abstract: A method for downloading data, includes the steps of partitioning a file targeted for downloading into a set of segments, with each segment comprising segment data. The method also includes encapsulating the set of segments into a set of graphics files and downloading a subset of graphics files within the set of graphics files into a cache corresponding to a computer system coupled to the Internet. The method further includes extracting segment data encapsulated within the subset of graphics files to recreate a portion of the file targeted for downloading.

In one embodiment of the method of the present invention, the steps include receiving and storing, by the simple network printer, a broadcast from a raster image processor (RIP)-enabled unit announcing the RIP-enabled unit's capabilities and, upon receiving a RIP print job request from a source, requesting the RIP-enabled unit to proxy the print job and send the print job in simple format to the simple network printer for printing.

Also, the voting ballot includes at least one contest identified in the ballot specification, wherein at least one of the selection areas is associated with the at least one contest. The service location system uses the requested criteria for the requested publishing content to obtain first publishing content that satisfies the requested criteria from the at least one content server. The service location system returns the first publishing content to the publishing system.

Abstract: Software driver installation is automated. An automated installation object is run on a computing system. The automated installation object determines which peripheral devices are attached to the computing system. The automated installation object determines for which peripheral devices found attached to the computing system the automated installation object is able to perform automated installation. For each of these peripheral devices the automated installation object determines a network location that contains a driver installation program for the peripheral device. The automated installation object downloads the driver installation program from the network location. The automated installation object runs the driver installation program on the computing system to install a device driver for the peripheral device.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for acquiring data in a computer system. The present system and method provide a distinct advantage in that a local printer/scanner is employed to perform data acquisition to a central server or other system, etc. In one embodiment, the present system includes a processor circuit having a processor and a memory. Stored on the processor and executable by the memory is scan/correction logic. The scan/correction logic includes logic to obtain a set of coordinates of a response area on a digital form and logic to transmit the coordinates to a scanning apparatus to scan a hardcopy form at the coordinates to determine a response recorded thereon. The hardcopy form is associated with the digital form. Finally, the scan/correction logic includes logic to store the response received from the scanner/printer apparatus in an answer file in the memory.
