Patent number: 10401057Abstract: An induced groundwater flow closed loop geothermal system provides safety associated with closed loop geothermal systems (e.g., no mixing of surface water, closed system fluid, and groundwater) and efficiency associated with open loop geothermal systems (e.g., increased heat transfer provided by groundwater flow). A heat exchanger connected to an external system is located in a hole in a geological formation. The hole has a depth below where groundwater is located. A fluid from the external system is routed through the heat exchanger. A pump is utilized to induce groundwater flow from the geological formation, across the heat exchanger and back to the geological formation to enable thermal transfer between the fluid and the groundwater and the groundwater and the geological formation. A casing may be located in the hole to provide structural support and grouting materials may be used to fill space around the casing enabling a groundwater flow path.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2017Date of Patent: September 3, 2019Assignee: Woods Technologies, LLCInventor: Kevin Woods

Patent number: 10382662Abstract: An apparatus and method for the operation of, or the arrangement and operation of, a surveillance system comprising a plurality of camera towers, each of which comprises a plurality of cameras tasked with surveilling a plurality of points-of-interest (POIs). In its most general setting, given limited camera towers, the system (a) determines which locations should install towers, (b) evaluates surveillance requirements ƒ that specify the probability that each camera should surveil each POI at any point in time, and (c) generates a set of camera configurations and frequency-of-utilization vector ? for those configurations that creates a surveillance schedule to meet requirements ƒ over T. By applying ?, the apparatus and method directs each camera to orient at successive time points to surveil in a manner that is relatively unpredictable to adversaries and which meets requirements ƒ. In specialized embodiments, surveillance requirements and/or fixed placements of camera towers are pre-specified.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2018Date of Patent: August 13, 2019Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Javier Salmeron-Medrano, Roger Kevin Wood

Publication number: 20180329914Abstract: The invention provides a large technological infrastructure to provide a unique comparison of athletic performance using a system. When a user traverses a route during a workout, the system can identify individual ones of a set of predetermined courses that are associated with the route. The system can include a unique point system and can compare aggregate athletic performances of different users across different geographical tracks or sections. Advantageously, people who cannot do the same course(s) can compete with one another; aggregate performances can be accumulated to give an overall performance metric; and people with differing abilities can compete with one another.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 10, 2018Publication date: November 15, 2018Inventors: Robin Thurston, Kevin Wood, Kevin Callahan, Sebastian Johnck

Patent number: 10036215Abstract: A method and apparatus for attaching tubulars to a tubular string in a well bore. The apparatus includes a drill rig elevator configured with a rotatable set of slips that grip the tubular to be added to the tubular string. As a result, the elevator can grip the tubular to pick up and position the tubular and can continue to grip the tubular as the tubular is spun to be threaded onto the tubular string in the well bore. The slips can also be moved axially to compensate for movement of the tubular toward the tubular string as the tubular threadingly attaches to the tubular string.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2014Date of Patent: July 31, 2018Assignee: WEATHERFORD TECHNOLOGY HOLDINGS, LLCInventor: Kevin Wood

Patent number: 9745802Abstract: A connection between two wellbore components includes a male portion with sets of male formations formed on an outer surface and male knobs disposed around the outer surface. A female portion has mating sets of female formations formed on an inner surface thereof, with each set separated by a female gap and female knobs disposed around the inner surface. Each male gap is wider than each female formation and each female gap is wider than each male formation. The male and female portions can be mated together in a manner whereby the male sets occupy female gaps and the female sets occupy the male gaps and, thereafter, the male portion is rotatable in a counterclockwise direction relative to the female portion to interconnect the male and female formations, thereby preventing axial movement of one portion relative to the other portion.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2015Date of Patent: August 29, 2017Assignee: Weatherford Technology Holdings, LLCInventors: Jeffery Morrison, Kevin Wood, Richard Lee Giroux
