  • Patent number: 5752264
Abstract: A hierarchical cache architecture that reduces traffic on a main memory bus while overcoming the disadvantages of prior systems. The architecture includes a plurality of level one caches that are of the store through type, each level one cache is associated with a processor and may be incorporated into the processor. Subsets (or "clusters") of processors, along with their associated level one caches, are formed and a level two cache is provided for each cluster. Each processor-level one cache pair within a cluster is coupled to the cluster's level two cache through a dedicated bus. By configuring the processors and caches in this manner, not only is the speed advantage normally associated with the use of cache memory realized, but the number of memory bus accesses is reduced without the disadvantages associated with the use of store in type caches at level one and without the disadvantages associated with the use of a shared cache bus.

  • Patent number: 5741682
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of producing increased amounts of a protein of interest in a cell by induction. The method includes transfecting a cell with multiple copies of an expression vector, each copy of which includes an expressible gene encoding an enzymatically functional dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and an expressible gene encoding a protein of interest. Transfected cells are cultured in the presence of methotrexate (MTX) to produce a plurality of clones. A clone containing plural copy number of the vectors which co-express DHFR and the protein of interest is then selected and cultured. The cultured clone is treated with MTX to enhance the expression of the protein of interest by inducing an increase in transcription without substantially amplifying the genes encoding the protein of interest and DHFR.

  • Patent number: 5734865
Abstract: A local host data processing system operating under the control of a local host operating system includes components of multiple emulating hosted operating systems. The host operating system further include a TCP/IP network protocol stack which couples to the communications facilities of the host system connected to a local area network for communicating with a number of remote host systems. Host and hosted operating systems share the same TCP/IP network protocol stack. A virtual network mechanism is configured within the local host system to be operatively coupled to the host network protocol stack and provide access to well-known port application programs. When so configured, the mechanism functions as another LAN to which multiple virtual host systems are attached for executing applications under control of the emulating hosted operating systems.

  • Patent number: 5731239
Abstract: A method for making low sheet resistance sub-quarter-micrometer gate electrode lengths on field effect transistors has been achieved. The method involves patterning gate electrodes on a silicon substrate from a conductively doped polysilicon layer having a silicon nitride layer on the surface. After forming the FET lightly doped drains (LDD), the sidewall spacers, and the heavily doped source/drain contact regions with titanium contacts, an insulating layer is chemically/mechanically polished back to the silicon nitride or silicon oxynitride on the gate electrode layer to form a planar self-aligning mask. A pre-amorphizing implantation is carried out, and a titanium silicide is selectively formed on the gate electrodes resulting in small grain sizes and much reduced sheet resistance. The self-aligned mask prevents ion implant damage to the shallow source/drain regions adjacent to the FET gate electrodes.

  • Patent number: 5719854
Abstract: Techniques for (a) controlling admission of customers to a shared resource, (b) adjusting the capacity of a resource in light of new customer demand, and (c) diverting usage from a failed resource to alternative resources, each use a "blocking probability computer" (BPC) to solve a resource-sharing model that has a product-form steady-state distribution. The techniques allow each customer to obtain an appropriate grade of service and protection against overloads from other customers. Each customer is a source of a series of requests, and is assigned "upper-limit" (UL) and "guaranteed-minimum" (GM) "bounds" on its requests. The upper limit bound puts an upper limit on the number of requests from that customer that can be in service at any time. The guaranteed-minimum bound guarantees that there will always be available resource units in the resources to serve a specified number of requests from that customer.

  • Patent number: 5691627
Abstract: A full shunting BVL with current sense capability includes a pair of parallel connected switches that switch with the same duty cycle D/2 but 180 degrees out of phase to provide current from a power source through a coupled power inductor to a bus. A current transformer is provided with first and second windings connected in series with the pair of switches, respectively, and a third winding. The alternating conduction of current through the first and second windings produces a bidirectional voltage across the third sensor winding that automatically resets the current transformer's ferrite core during each cycle. As a result, the bidirectional voltage can be rectified to produce a current sense signal. The current sense signal is used to provide current-mode control to regulate the bus voltage and supply the demanded load current. The current sense signal can also be used to provide current limiting and current sharing, which allows multiple BVLs to be connected to the same solar array.

  • Patent number: 5677567
Abstract: A device and method for increasing integrated circuit density comprising at least a pair of superimposed dice, wherein at least one of the superimposed dice has at least one bond pad variably positioned on an active surface of the die. A plurality of lead fingers from a leadframe extend between the dice. The leadframe comprises at least one lead with leads of non-uniform length and configuration to attach to the differently positioned bond pads of the multiple dice. An advantage of the present invention is that it allows dice with differing bond pad arrangements to be used in a superimposed configuration to increase circuit density, while eliminating the use of bond wires in such a configuration.
