  • Patent number: 5675771
Abstract: A host data processing system which includes a plurality of input/output devices operates under the control of an enhanced version of the UNIX operating system. The host system includes an emulator which runs as an application process for executing user emulated system (ES) application programs. The emulator includes a number of emulated system executive service components operating in shared memory and an interpreter, an emulator monitor call unit (EMCU) and a number of server facilities operating in the host memory. The ES executive service command handler component is extended to accommodate a number of dual decor commands which invoke host system facilities to execute terminal based commands either synchronously or asynchronously through the automatic creation of host shell mechanisms directly accessible by emulated system users. The server facilities include a network terminal driver (NTD) server for executing emulated system user terminal requests through host system drivers.

  • Patent number: 5670378
Abstract: Trace levels of molecular oxygen are measured by introducing a gas containing the molecular oxygen into a target zone, and impacting the molecular oxygen in the target zone with electrons at the O.sup.- resonant energy level for dissociative electron attachment to produce O.sup.- ions. Preferably, the electrons have an energy of about 4 to about 10 eV. The amount of O.sup.- ions produced is measured, and is correlated with the molecular oxygen content in the target zone. The technique is effective for measuring levels of oxygen below 50 ppb, and even less than 1 ppb. The amount of O.sup.- can be measure in a quadrupole mass analyzer. Best results are obtained when the electrons have an energy of about 6 to about 8 eV, and preferably about 6.8 eV. The method can be used for other species by selecting the appropriate electron energy level.

  • Patent number: 5657666
Abstract: A transmission mechanism is capable of effectively attenuating vibrations generated thereby during operation by converting vibrations into heat energy. The base plate is provided with a plurality of flexible connecting ribs and a plurality of substantially sectorial openings formed alternately around a motor base part for holding a motor and bearing parts for supporting the shafts of the gears. Each of the gears has a rim provided on its outer circumference with teeth, a hub and flexible arms connecting the rim to the hub. Vibrations generated by the motor and those generated by the gears strain the flexible connecting ribs of the base plate and the flexible arms of the gears, the strains of the flexible connecting ribs and the flexible arms are converted into heat energy in the end and the heat energy dissipates, so that the variations are attenuated and noise attributable to the vibrations is suppressed.

  • Patent number: 5653863
Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for determining the concentration of an analyte in a fluid test sample by applying the fluid test sample to the surface of a working electrode which is electrochemically connected to a reference electrode which surface bears a composition comprising an enzyme specific for the analyte. A mediator is reduced in response to a reaction between the analyte and the enzyme. An oxidizing potential is applied between the electrodes to return at least a portion of the mediator back to its oxidized form before determining the concentration of the analyte to thereby increase the accuracy of the analyte determination. Following this initially applied potential, the circuit is switched to an open circuit or to a potential that substantially reduces the current to minimize the rate of electrochemical potential at the working electrode. A second potential is applied between the electrodes and the current generated in the fluid test sample is measured to determine analyte concentration.

  • Patent number: 5636371
Abstract: A local host data processing system operating under the control of a local host operating system includes components of a hosted operating system. The host operating system further include a TCP/IP network protocol stack which couples to the communications facilities of the host system connected to a local area network for communicating with a number of remote host systems. Host and hosted operating systems share the same TCP/IP network protocol stack. A virtual network mechanism is configured within the local host system to be operatively coupled to the host network protocol stack and provide access to well-known port application programs. When so configured, the mechanism functions as another LAN to which the hosted operating system is attached. The mechanism transforms the well-known port identifier of each inbound packet into a non-well-known port identifier in addition to other station address identifier fields.

  • Patent number: 5628123
Abstract: An attachment for a hair dryer is disclosed of the type that requires a source of power, for example a massaging apparatus or an infra-red radiation heater. Rather than provide the attachment with its own power source, the attachment is formed with a terminal that allows it to be connected to the power supply circuit of a suitably adapted hair dryer.

  • Patent number: 5623535
Abstract: Each mobile unit in a cellular communications system accumulates at least one mobility or communications traffic (teletraffic) statistic representative of "typical" operation of the mobile unit within the cellular communications system. The mobile units process or collect the statistics and then transmit the aggregate statistics to a microcell or macrocell base station at time of origination of a call to or from the mobile, request for a handoff of a call by the mobile unit or the registration process. Included within the characteristics which can be monitored in accordance with the present invention are the following: cell sojourn time; area sojourn time; call holding times; call throughput; number of previous handoffs in an ongoing call; time periods between two consecutive failed handoffs for the mobile unit; and, the ratio of calls originating from a mobile unit to the number of calls terminating to a mobile unit.
