  • Patent number: 8247763
Abstract: The main voltage generator (5) applies a rectangular-wave radio-frequency voltage to the ring electrode (21) in order to capture ions inside the ion trap (2). In the case where the TOFMS (3) is operated in the reflectron mode, the radio-frequency voltage is changed into a constant voltage value when the phase thereof is 1.5?, and a voltage for expelling ions is applied to the end cap electrodes (22, 23) to expel the ions from the exit aperture (25) and introduce them into the TOFMS (3). In this case, since the velocity spread of the ions inside the ion trap (2) is small and so is the spatial spread thereof, a high mass resolution and accuracy can be achieved while assuring a high detection sensitivity. In the case where the TOFMS (3) is operated in the linear mode, the radio-frequency voltage is changed into a constant voltage value when the phase thereof is 0.5?, and then the ions are expelled.

  • Publication number: 20120132799
Abstract: A samples stage (2) on which a sample (4) is placed can reciprocally move along a guide (5) by a driving mechanism. An image taken by an imaging unit (7) when the sample stage (2) is at an observation position (A) is processed by an image processor (34) and is displayed on a window of a display unit (38). When an analysis operator specifies a measurement area by an operation unit (37), a controller (3) moves, through a stage driver (33), the stage (2) to a sample operation position (B) and a matrix is applied to the specified measurement area by an ejector (9). After that, the stage (2) is moved to an analysis position (C) and a laser light is delivered onto the measurement area on the sample (4) to which the matrix was applied, and the ionization by the MALDI method is performed. This eliminates the need to take out the sample from the apparatus to apply the matrix after the measurement point or measurement area is determined based on a microscopic observation of the sample.

  • Publication number: 20120104247
Abstract: A sample stage (2) on which a sample (4) is placed can be reciprocally moved along a guide (5) by a driving mechanism (6). A cutter (9) which is moved in an X-Y plane by a driving mechanism (10) is placed at a sample cutting position (B). When the sample stage (2) is moved to the sample cutting position (B) and the cutter is driven with the height of the sample stage (2) being appropriately adjusted, an upper portion of the sample 4 is horizontally cut off with a predetermined thickness and a new sample analysis surface which was inside the sample 4 is exposed. Hence, by repeating a mass analysis for a predetermined measurement area at an analysis position (C) and a partial cutting of the sample 4 at the sample cutting position (B), it is possible to achieve a three-dimensional mass analysis imaging of the sample (4) without removing the sample (4) from the sample stage (2).

  • Publication number: 20110315874
Abstract: When specimen (4) is placed on specimen stage (2), controller (32)—via the stage driver (33) and drive mechanism (6)—moves the specimen stage (2) by a predetermined step pitch according to the magnification factor in the X-direction and the Y-direction, and the image pickup unit (7) acquires a microscopic observation image of the specimen (4) after each move. The microscopic observation image that is acquired and the position data of the specimen stage (2) when the image is acquired are stored in memory (321). When a plurality of microscopic observation images of the areas that are adjacent on the specimen (2) are obtained, the image integration processor (322) uses the position data to join the microscopic observation images. When a plurality of microscopic observation images that encompasses the entirety of the specimen (2) is all joined together to form a specimen observation image, the specimen observation image is displayed on a display unit 37.

  • Patent number: 8058610
Abstract: A sample plate 3 with a sample 4 placed thereon is initially set on a stage 2, and a visual image of the sample is taken with a CCD camera 14. This image is stored in an image data memory 23. Then, an operator removes the sample plate 3, sprays a matrix for a MALDI process onto the sample 4 and replaces the plate onto the stage 2. After that, when a predetermined operation is made, a clear image of the sample taken before the application of the matrix is shown on a display unit 24. On this image, the operator specifies a point or area for the analysis. The sample 4 may have been displaced due to the removal and replacement of the plate 3. Accordingly, an image analyzer 44 calculates the direction and magnitude of the displacement, for example, by recognizing the position of the markings provided on the sample plate 3. A displacement corrector 42 computes coordinate values in which the displacement is corrected.

  • Publication number: 20110231109
Abstract: The present invention aims at creating an accurate mass spectrum with a high resolving power based on a plurality of multi-turn time-of-flight (TOF) spectra, while reducing the amount of computation to assure the real-time processing. First, a plurality of TOF spectra each obtained for a different timing when ions are ejected from the loop orbit are measured (S2 and S3). At this point, the concept of the coincidence detection method is utilized to determine what mass-to-charge ratio a peak appearing on the TOF spectra originates from. From the information on the peak of interest in one TOF spectrum and other data, the time range in which a corresponding peak appears on other TOF spectra is set, and the existence or nonexistence of the peak in that range is determined (S5). In the case where the corresponding peak is found on most of the other TOF spectra, the m/z is deduced from the peak on the TOF spectrum with the highest resolving power and a mass spectrum is created (S6 and S7).

  • Publication number: 20110168883
Abstract: A mass spectrometer is provided that restrains the signal intensity of an MS/MS spectrum from decreasing according to the secondary dissociation of a primary fragment ion generated by a photodissociation. An excitation laser light for causing a photodissociation is irradiated to the trapping space A in the ion trap 1. At the same time, an excitation signal that does not excite a precursor ion but excites fragment ions is applied to the end cap electrodes 12 and 13. Since the selected precursor ions gather around the center of the trapping space A, they are irradiated by the excitation laser light and efficiently dissociated. The fragment ions generated by this are immediately excited by the excitation electric field's effect, and are vibrated wildly to be out of the excitation light irradiated space B. Therefore, the fragment ions are not easily irradiated by the excitation laser light and the secondary dissociation does not easily occur.

  • Publication number: 20110121175
Abstract: The present invention aims at enhancing the ion transport efficiency in an ion guide for transporting ions into the subsequent stage while converging the ions by using a collisional cooling method and a radio-frequency electric field. In the present invention, a transport region through which ions pass is divided into an anterior region #1 having a region length L1 and an posterior region #2 having a, region length L2, and the intensity of the direct-current electric field can be set for each of the regions. A direct-current electric field for appropriately accelerating ions is formed in the region #1 so that the collisional cooling of ions is sufficiently performed while the ions are traveling through the region #1 and the ions are sufficiently converged around the ion optical axis C near the end point of the region #1.

  • Patent number: 7928372
Abstract: A mass spectrometer is provided in which ions are favorably introduced into a loop orbit or favorably led out from the loop orbit without affecting the motion of the ions flying along the loop orbit. An ion-introduction orbit 5 is set to correspond to the orbit (ejection orbit portion 4) of ions after being bent by the sector-shaped electric field E1 in the loop orbit 4. When ions are introduced, a voltage applied to the electrode unit 11 is put to zero to release the sector-shaped electric field E1. Then the ions emitted along the ion-introduction orbit 5 fly straight in the electrode unit 11. The direction and position of the ions coming out from the exit end of the electric field is the same as those ions flying along the loop orbit 4. Therefore, there is no need for placing a deflection electrode for introducing/leading-out ions on the loop orbit.

  • Patent number: 7858937
Abstract: A sample S is irradiated with a two-dimensionally spread ray of laser light to simultaneously ionize substances within a two-dimensional area on the sample. The resultant ions are mass-separated by a TOF mass separator 4 without changing the interrelationship of the emission points of the ions. The separated ions are then directed to a two-dimensional detector section 7 through a deflection electric field created by deflection electrodes 61 and 62. The two-dimensional detector section 7 consists of a plurality of detection units 7a arranged in parallel, each unit including an MCP 8a, fluorescent plate 9a and two-dimensional array detector 10a. The magnitude of deflecting the flight path of the ions by the deflection electric field is changed in a stepwise manner with the lapse of time from the generation of the ions so that a plurality of mass analysis images are sequentially projected on each detection unit 7.

  • Patent number: 7759640
Abstract: In a mass spectrometer for carrying out mass analysis while microscopically observing a two-dimensional area of a sample 15, the observation position for selecting a target portion while observing an image of the sample 15 captured with a CCD camera 23 is separated from the analysis position for carrying out the mass analysis of the sample 15 by delivering laser light from the laser-delivering unit 20 onto the sample 15. The sample 15 is placed on a stage 13, which can be precisely moved between the observation position and the analysis position by a stage-driving mechanism 30. An observation optical system 24 can be set close to the sample 15 at the observation position, without impeding the flight of the ions generated from the sample 15 during the analysis or interfering with a laser-condensing optical system 22. Thus, the spatial resolution for observation is improved without deteriorating the ion-detecting efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7683316
Abstract: The number of times of repetition of mass spectrometry analysis for integrating mass profiles is reduced to facilitate reduction in measurement time-period and increase a signal intensity. In a state when ions are trapped by a high-frequency electric field formed within an ion trap, a rectangular-wave high-frequency voltage to be applied from a main voltage generation section to a ring electrode is temporarily stopped, and next ions are introduced from an ion entrance port into the ion trap in a state when only a static electric field exists within the ion trap. The high-frequency voltage application is re-started while at least a part of previously-trapped ions remain within the ion trap, to trap the newly-introduced ions in addition to the previous ions so as to increase an amount of ions to be accumulated, and the accumulated ions are subjected to the mass spectrometry analysis.
