  • Patent number: 6238453
Abstract: A process for producing stainless steels, particularly special steels containing chromium and chromium-nickel, in a smelting arrangement having at least two vessels, for supplying a steel foundry. A charge having mostly iron-containing raw scrap materials and partially carbon-containing alloy carriers is melted in a first vessel. At a temperature of 1460° C., the melt is decarburized by the injection of oxygen so as to reduce the carbon content to less than 0.3%. The melt is heated to a tapping temperature of between 1620° C. to 1720° C. and the carbon content is subsequently reduced to 0.1%. A second charge is melted in a second vessel simultaneously with the decarburizing of the first charge in the first vessel.

  • Patent number: 5867296
Abstract: A light beam deflection unit is formed of a light-transmissive deflection prism extending in the direction of an optical axis and of a carrier prism. The deflection prism has a light entry face oriented essentially perpendicular to the optical axis, a reflection face proceeding obliquely relative to the optical axis and a light exit face. The carrier prism is joined to the deflection prism at the reflection face and supplements the latter to form a composite unit essentially symmetrical relative to the optical axis that is seated rotatable around the optical axis. For the purpose of reducing air turbulence upon rotation of the composite unit, a hollow-cylindrical element whose cylinder axis essentially coincides with the optical axis and whose inside diameter at least corresponds to the diameter of the light beam incident onto the light entry face and that is connected to the composite unit is arranged in front of the light entry face.

  • Patent number: 5286008
Abstract: A system for inerting a casting vessel, such as a traversable ladle or torpedo vessel, used for transporting molten metal, the vessel being positioned below the molten metal outlet opening at a transfer station, and the vessel cavity being flushed with an inert gas both prior to the molten metal inletting and during the inflow of the molten metal in such a manner as to avoid contact between the molten metal surface and the vessel and the atomospheric oxygen. A blowpipe is arranged in the vicinity of the molten metal outlet opening but does not intersect the molten metal stream, is located outside the free space profile of the vessel at least during the approach and return of the vessel, and terminates a distance from the vessel inlet opening and produces at its terminal end an inert gas stream which enters the cavity of the vessel adjacent the molten metal stream at an acute angle.
