  • Publication number: 20080072147
Abstract: A system and method applied to a communications network which transmits document portions in which an original document portion having an identifier portion and an information portion is replaced or swapped with a substitute document portion. A controller, typically a proxy server, reads the identifier portion of the original document portion, determines the information portion of the original document portion, and issues a swap order when an undesired original document portion is found. A substitute document server receives the swap order and sends the substitute document portion to the controller. A swapping device or mechanism inserts the substitute document portion in place of the original document portion and the substitute document portion is passed on to the user set and displayed. The controller and swapping mechanism can be integrated with the user set or with the resources of the service provider and their functionality can reside in software.

  • Patent number: 7343564
Abstract: Tickers are populated with location-based information that is selected according to the geographic location of communication devices. The location of a communication device is identified based on a GPS system, proximity to transmitters in a wireless network, user input, or using other techniques. Location-appropriate content is obtained either in real-time from the network or from a local data store at the communication device. In general location-based, context-aware content can be displayed on tickers associated with a variety of communication devices, including mobile communication devices and “immobile” or stationary personal computers. When a ticker item is selected from the ticker, a location associated with the selected ticker item and/or a location of the communication device is used to generate a map that is displayed on the display of the device to the user.

  • Patent number: 7317929
Abstract: This invention makes it possible to deliver the voice portion of a Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) message to a recipient without requiring the recipient wireless stations to be MMS-enabled. A sender creates an MMS message, and sends it to the wireless station of the intended recipient. If the recipient wireless station is not MMS-enabled, the message is conveyed to a message server, where its voice content is extracted and stored in the interactive voice recognition (IVR) system. If the intended recipient wireless station supports the Short Message Service (SMS) protocol, an SMS notification alerting the recipient to the arrival of a new message is transmitted. In the event that the recipient wireless station is neither MMS- nor SMS-enabled, the recipient can be alerted of the receipt of a MMS message by Voicemail, Email, Instant Message, Page, or another medium able to effect delivery. The notification includes instructions for accessing the voice portion of the MMS message from the IVR system.

  • Patent number: 7272400
Abstract: The load in a cell or a cell sector is balanced in the process of sending store and forward messages to multiple recipients located in a single cell or cell sector. When one or more messages are sent over a wireless communication network to one or more recipient devices, information about the identity of the base station and cell sector serving the recipient device(s) is obtained. A current load for the cell or cell sector can also be obtained and used to control the number of simultaneous message transmissions to the cell sector to avoid overloading the sector. Message transmission may be allocated according to predetermined transmission rules for a cell sector or by dynamically allocating message transmission according to fluctuating traffic loads in the cell sector. Accordingly, a first subset of messages may be transmitted to a single recipient, or a single message may be transmitted to a subset of intended recipient devices.

  • Patent number: 7133687
Abstract: A sender can create and send an instant voice message that can be delivered to recipients with SMS-enabled wireless stations regardless of the other communication capabilities of the wireless stations and the network or network service providers of the recipients. The sender creates an instant voice message and sends the message to a message server, which stores the message in an interactive voice response (IVR) system. If the instant voice message is a Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) message and the intended recipient's device does not support the MMS protocol, the voice content is extracted from the message and stored in the IVR system. An SMS notification is sent to the recipient and includes instructions for accessing the instant voice message from the IVR system. The SMS notification enables the recipient to access the instant voice message. The recipient can also create and reply to the voice message.

  • Publication number: 20060217110
Abstract: Advertisements and the timing of the display thereof on tickers of mobile devices are selected based on activity of the mobile devices and bids made by advertisers. Advertisers define conditions of the mobile devices that are to trigger the display of particular advertisements. The advertisers can also bid for priority placement of advertisements and can set spending limits to manage budgets. During use of a mobile device in a mobile communications network, parameter data defining conditions associated with the mobile device and the operation thereof is generated. The mobile device also generates event data defining events or activity of the mobile device or the associated mobile user. The parameter data and the event data are used by an advertising system of the mobile communications network to select an advertisement and the timing of the display of the advertisement, respectively. Any priority given to particular advertisements based on bids made by advertisers is also used to select the advertisement.

  • Publication number: 20060189333
Abstract: A unified messaging interface and associated methods that enables mobile communication device users to initiate the creation of a message for a recipient without being required to explicitly specify the type of message that is to be created. The mobile communication device supports multiple message types, such as voice, text, and picture messages. The user begins providing message content to the communication device by, for example, speaking, entering text, or clicking a shutter of a camera. The unified messaging interface detects the nature of the content and creates a corresponding type of message. The user can indicate a desire to create and send a message by performing “one-click” action. The one-click action is an operation performed on the device that can be instantiated as a single button-press on the keypad; selection of a single soft key by depressing a button on the keypad or touching the screen of the device; or issuance of a single voice command.

  • Patent number: 7089027
Abstract: A method and system that helps to reduce delay in initiating communication sessions. A network entity operates as a signaling agent on behalf of a terminating node and positively acknowledges a session initiation request on behalf of the terminating node without first receiving a positive acknowledgement from the terminating node. For example, the network entity may first send an alert message to the terminating node and then positively respond to the session initiation request before receiving from the terminating node a response to the alert message. As another example, the network entity may first positively respond to the session initiation request and then send an alert message to the terminating node. This arrangement can advantageously allow the session setup process to continue, without first waiting for an actual positive acknowledgement from the terminating node.

  • Publication number: 20060094472
Abstract: An optimal compressor/decompressor (codec) module is intelligently selected for use when transmitting audio from a mobile communication device to a recipient. The codec can be selected based on the type of the audio data or the characteristics of the recipient. The codec can also be selected based on whether the audio data is to be transmitted to the recipient in real time or recorded and transmitted asynchronously. Audio data that is to be transmitted to the recipient is encoded or compressed using the selected codec and then sent to the recipient. Selection of the codec in this manner permits the compression to be optimized in response to specific circumstances associated with the communication of the audio data between the sender device and the recipient. The codec can be selected during the communication in response to a tone or other data provided by the recipient.
