Abstract: A file format structure for use with scalable video coding systems and methods, where a rate share operation box indicates which adaptation operation points for coded media are available in a file. The rate share operation box can include a characterization of the adaptation result for each adaptation operation point. In addition, the rate share operation box can include an identifier that indicates which algorithm was used in generating each adaptation operation point.

Abstract: An explicit signaling element for controlling decoded picture output and applications when picture output is not desired. A signal element, such as a syntax element in a coded video bitstream, is used to indicate (1) whether a certain decoded picture is output; (2) whether a certain set of pictures are output, wherein the set of pictures may be explicitly signaled or implicitly derived; or (3) whether a certain portion of a picture is output. The signal element may be a part of the coded picture or access unit that it is associated with, or it may reside in a separate syntax structure from the coded picture or access unit, such as a sequence parameter set. The signal element can be used both by an encoder and a decoder in a video coding system, as well as a processing unit that produces a subset of a bitstream as output.

Abstract: A system and method for improving both coding efficiency and decoding accuracy in scalable video coding involving discardable lower layer adaptations, where applications can omit transmission of unused data for inter-layer prediction for all layers below an operation point of receivers. Indicator flags are utilized to avoid transmitting syntax elements that must be set to fixed values. In addition, padding algorithms or additional encoding constraints are applied to the encoding process.

Abstract: A system and method for predicting an inter-layer predicted slice of image data from at least two different reference layers, where the inter-layer predicted slice of image data itself resides on yet another layer, different from either of the two reference layers. At least one coded block from the inter-layer predicted slice of image data is encoded with an indication, indicating to a decoder that the at least one coded block is to be inter-layer multi-predicted from the at least two different reference layers. Identifications and corresponding prediction weights of the at least two different reference layers are also signaled to the decoder either in the coded block itself, or in the inter-layer predicted slice of image data.

Abstract: A method, electronic device, computer program product, system and circuit assembly are provided for allocating one or more redundant pictures by taking into consideration the information content of the primary pictures, with which the redundant pictures would be associated. In particular, primary pictures that are determined to be more sensitive to transmission loss or corruption may be allocated one or more redundant pictures, while those that are less sensitive may not be so allocated. By selectively allocating redundant pictures to only those primary pictures that are more sensitive, the method disclosed reduces the amount of overhead associated with redundant pictures and increases the coding efficiency, without sacrificing the integrity of the video data.

Abstract: A package for a surface-emitting laser encloses the die between a sub-mount and a cap. The sub-mount and the cap can be formed using wafer processing techniques that permit a wafer level packaging process which attaches multiple die to a sub-mount wafer, attaches caps either separated or as part of a cap wafer to the sub-mount wafer, and cuts the structure to separate individual packages. The cap includes a transparent plate that can be processed to incorporate an optical element such as a lens. An alignment post attached to the cap indicates the position of an optical signal from the laser and fits snugly into one end of a sleeve while an optical fiber connector fits into the other end.

Abstract: A system and method for signaling and indicating track relationship information in media files. The present invention provides a mechanism for signaling the information of layered track groups and the information of MDC track groups, as well as a mechanism for signaling track relationship information in an efficient way. In local playback or unicast streaming applications, to select an independently decodable track for a certain media type, the information of alternate track groups is first found via the track relation box, and one track is selected from an alternate track group for the media type. If stream switching is desired, the switching track group information is found via the track relation box. In multicast applications with scalable or MDC streams, the tracks in a layered or MDC group are found via the track relation box and selected among all the layered or MDC groups.

Abstract: A system and method for conveying supplemental enhancement information related to different pictures in one access unit. Different pictures in one access unit may be pictures of each layer of a scalable video, pictures of each view of a multiview video, or pictures of each description in a multiple description coding (MDC) video. An indication is included in the coded bitstream indicating the pictures with which the supplemental enhancement information message is associated. During a subsequent decoding process, the device performing the decoding recognizes this information and uses it appropriately.

Abstract: A method for signaling ROI scalability information in a file format. The present invention provides an efficient signaling of ROI scalability information in the file format, wherein the signaling comprises providing the geometrical information of a ROI and an indication to identify the ROI each coded data unit is associated with within a tier or layer.

Abstract: In a method of encoding/decoding a video sequence, which is composed of video frames, at least one video frame is divided into a set of coding blocks, and at least one of the coding blocks is encoded by intra-coding. Then a first reliable region that comprises at least one intra-coded coding block is determined, and the first reliable region in the video sequence is encoded such that creation of an information dependency between the first reliable region and coding blocks outside the first reliable region is prevented.

Abstract: A device, an encoding method, and a decoding method enable a separate marking of base representations and enhanced representations of key access units to save memory or to allow a better scalable video coding optimization. The encoding method of a sequence of original pictures to a sequence of access units includes, after encoding of one of the access units, storing a first decoded picture of the first encoded picture and a second decoded picture of the second encoded picture for inter prediction for encoding of others of the access units; and identifying the first decoded picture and the second decoded picture to be no longer used for inter prediction.

Abstract: The use of a picture delimiter that is contained in a NAL unit type value that is reserved in the current AVC or SVC specification. The present invention provides the scalability information for the H.264/AVC base layer in such a manner that bitstreams remain decodable with H.264/AVC decoders. In addition, the picture delimiter of the present invention may contain many other syntax elements that can help in easier processing of bitstreams compared to the plain H.264/AVC bitstream syntax.

Abstract: An indirect aggregator NAL unit for the SVC file format and RTP payload format for video coding. The indirect aggregator NAL unit of the present invention enables easy identification of scalability dependencies within a bit stream, thereby enabling fast and efficient stream manipulation. Furthermore, the indirect aggregator NAL unit of the present invention ensures that a base layer of the streams can still be processed with a H.264/AVC decoder, AVC file format parser, and H.264/AVC RTP payload parser.

Abstract: A video coding and decoding method, wherein a picture is first divided into sub-pictures corresponding to one or more subjectively important picture regions and to a background region sub-picture, which remains after the other sub-pictures are removed from the picture. The sub-pictures are formed to conform to predetermined allowable groups of video coding macroblocks (MBs). The allowable groups of MBs can be, for example, of rectangular shape. The picture is then divided into slices so that each sub-picture is encoded independent of other sub-pictures except for the background region sub-picture, which may be coded using another sub-pictures. The slices of the background sub-picture are formed in a scan-order with skipping over MBs that belong to another sub-picture. The background sub-picture is only decoded if all the positions and sizes of all other sub-pictures can be reconstructed on decoding the picture.

Abstract: An encoder for use in scalable video coding has a mechanism to perform macroblock mode selection for the enhancement layer pictures. The mechanism includes a distortion estimator for each macroblock that reacts to channel errors such as packet losses or errors in video segments affected by error propagation; a Lagrange multiple selector for selecting a weighting factor according to estimated or signaled channel error rate, and a mode decision module or algorithm to choose the optimal mode based on encoding parameters. The mode decision module is configured to select the coding mode based on a sum of the estimated coding distortion and the estimated coding rate multiplied by the weighting factor.
