  • Patent number: 8085740
Abstract: A wireless Local Area Network (LAN 11) capable of providing “enterprise guest” hosting includes at least one an e-open wireless LAN access point (15) that provides access to both guests and local users. Upon receipt of a request for access, the access point forwards the request to an authentication proxy. The authentication proxy then authenticates the party requesting access in accordance with that party's status (that is, whether the party is a local user or guest). Upon successful authentication, the network routes the traffic from a local user differently as compared to that for a guest. For example traffic from guests goes to gateway for receipt in an external network such as the Internet, whereas traffic from the local user goes to a local network, e.g., a corporate intranet. In this way, the Wireless LAN 11, after ascertaining the status of the party requesting access, can limit guest traffic according to the guest access policy.

  • Patent number: 8059711
Abstract: A method and apparatus for staggercasting, encodes a first signal representing content and encodes a second signal representing the content using encoding relatively more robust than the encoding of the first encoded content representative signal. A composite signal including at least the first and second encoded signals is generated, in which one of the first and second encoded signals is delayed with respect to the other encoded signal. If an error is detected in the composite signal, then the undelayed encoded signal is decoded to reproduce the content. Otherwise, the delayed encoded signal is decoded to reproduce the content.

  • Patent number: 8036262
Abstract: A method and apparatus for storing staggercasted content includes encoding a set of signals representing content. The set of signals is capable of being decoded to produce a corresponding set of decoded signals, each decoded signal having a quality different from the qualities of the decoded signals corresponding to the other encoded signals. A composite signal comprising the set of encoded signals, staggered in time, is generated. The set of encoded signals is extracted from the composite signal. Errors in the set of extracted encoded signals are detected to produce a subset of available extracted encoded signals which are not erroneous. A content representative signal at a selectable desired quality is decoded. The decoded content representative signal is then stored in a storage device.

  • Patent number: 8027386
Abstract: A method for staggercasting, includes encoding a first signal representing content using encoding having successive independent decoding segments and encoding a second signal representing the content using encoding having successive independent decoding segments respectively corresponding to the independent decoding segments of the first encoded signal. A composite signal including the first and second encoded signals is generated in which the first encoded signal is delayed with respect to the second encoded signal. If an error is detected in the composite signal during a portion of an independent decoding segment of the delayed first encoded signal, then the corresponding independent decoding segment of the received second encoded signal is decoded to produce the content, otherwise, the received delayed first encoded signal is decoded to produce the content.

  • Patent number: 7983638
Abstract: A system, apparatus and/or method provides frequency response adjustment of an RF input filter of an RF tuner based on impedance of an antenna system that is providing reception of RF signals to the RF tuner. The frequency response adjustment is preferably accomplished dynamically and/or with respect to each frequency tuned. Particularly, the system, method and/or apparatus provides compensation at the RF tuner level for mistuning effects produced on the RF tuner by antenna system impedance presented at the antenna input that is other than a designed for impedance. Frequency response of an RF input filter for the RF tuner is electronically adjustable with an independent or semi-independent control voltage signal based on one or more measured parameters of a tuning frequency. Frequency response adjustment may include adjustment of a center frequency of the RF input filter bandpass frequency range and/or altering the bandpass frequency range of the RF input filter.

  • Patent number: 7907639
Abstract: A satellite communications system comprises a transmitter, a satellite transponder and a receiver. The transmitter transmits an uplink multi-level modulated signal (hierarchical modulation, layered modulation, etc.) to the satellite transponder, which broadcasts the multi-level modulated signal downlink to one, or more, receivers. The multi-level modulated signal comprises an upper layer and a lower layer. The lower layer conveys LDPC blocks, or LDPC frames, each LDPC block comprising S bits of data including a header portion and a data-bearing portion. The upper layer conveys shorter blocks, each shorter block comprising R bits of data, where R<S, the shorter block also comprising a header portion and a data-bearing portion. The transmitter synchronizes the start of transmission of each LDPC block to the start of transmission of a shorter block. The receiver uses the received shorter blocks to assist in searching for particular data in the lower layer portion of the received multi-level modulated signal.

  • Publication number: 20110013511
Abstract: Because packets dropped due to network congestion cannot reach the intended receiver whereas corrupted packets can still be received, the reception status of multiple packets is different for congested and non-congested paths. This difference reflects a spatial variation in the received data stream that is indicative of congestion. Network congestion detection is described that treats the reception status of sequences of multiple packets as patterns and converts the problem of congestion detection into a two-class pattern classification problem. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier is trained to classify the reception status of sequences of packets as being indicative or not of network congestion. If network congestion is detected, congestion control measures can then be taken. Extensive simulations demonstrate high detection accuracy under different network parameters.

  • Publication number: 20100315561
Abstract: A method and apparatus for staggercasting a plurality of content representative signals includes encoding a first and a corresponding second signal representing each of the plurality of content representative signals. A composite signal is generated comprising the plurality of first and second encoded signals. In the composite signal, each respective second encoded signal is delayed with respect to the corresponding first encoded signal. The first and second encoded signal representing a selected one of the content representative signals is extracted to reproduce the selected content representative signal. The extracted first encoded signal is decoded if an error is detected in the extracted second encoded signal, otherwise the extracted second encoded signal is decoded. When a different content representative signal is newly selected, the first extracted encoded signal is decoded until the delayed second extracted encoded signal is available.

  • Patent number: 7844992
Abstract: A Video-on-Demand Server architecture transmits a plurality of pre-coded programs having different bit rates across a fixed bandwidth channel. For each program, a generator generates a plurality of different bit rate representations for each program. Each generator also provides control information at each of a plurality of successive time windows T for each bit rate representation. The control information provides a bit rate and a quality measure during each time window T. The control information enables a statistical multiplexer to select a bit rate representation for each program during each time window T to maximize the quality of the selected representations while not exceeding the total available channel capacity.
