  • Publication number: 20070089144
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting a video signal from a set-top box to a display. Steps of the method include: receiving a raw signal, processing the raw signal into a ready-for-HDTV signal, compositing the ready-for-HDTV signal with at least one graphic element, encoding the composited signal using a video codec employing a protocol such as an MPEG-2 SP@HL protocol, transmitting the encoded signal to a television receiver, receiving the transmitted signal at the television receiver, decoding the received signal, and displaying the decoded signal. The apparatus includes: either an existing or a custom set-top box, the set-top box including external or internal circuitry, respectively, for processing raw video from a video source and circuitry for compositing graphic elements with a video signal, and external or internal circuitry for encoding a processed video signal using a video codec such as an MPEG-2 SP@HL protocol, and circuitry for transmitting the video signal to a television.

  • Patent number: 7046910
Abstract: Progressive I-slice refreshed MPEG data streams are transcoded to I-frame based MPEG data streams to enable trick play modes on a television appliance, such as pause, scan forward, scan backward, jump, or still frame displays for use, e.g., in film indexing (chapters). A progressive I-slice refreshed MPEG data stream 10 having I-slices distributed over multiple P-frames is received by a television appliance 300. The P-frames are decoded at decoder 220 to recover the I-slices which make up a complete I-frame. The recovered I-slices are assembled (e.g., by processor 230) into a complete I-frame. The complete I-frame is encoded at an encoder 250. A selected P-frame in the MPEG data stream is replaced with the encoded I-frame (e.g., via multiplexer 255) to provide an encoded I-frame based data stream 200. The I-frame based data stream is stored (e.g., in memory 240) for trick play mode use.

  • Publication number: 20040033053
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for reducing the tune-time delay in a television appliance having a PVR subsystem are provided. A first signal path provides a desired television signal for display without a PVR associated tune-time delay. The first signal path includes a first buffer for buffering the television signal and a decoder for decoding the buffered television signal for display. The second signal path includes a storage device for storing a copy of the buffered television signal, and a second buffer for buffering the stored television signal when a trick play mode is selected. The decoder decodes the buffered television signal to provide the requested trick play mode. A switch is provided under control of the processor for switching between display of the television signal via the first path and display of the trick play mode via the second path.

  • Patent number: 4084576
Abstract: There is disclosed a molded glass bulb-type solar collector which includes a parabolic specular reflector member and integral glass tubular member closed at the inner end extends along the focal axis of the reflecting surface. A shank portion of the tubular member extends outside the parabolic reflector and is open at the outer end. The tubular wall has its outside surface within the reflector coated with a wave length selective coating. A transparent glass cover plate that is preferably convex (domed) is sealed over the large open end of the reflector at a peripheral flange. The flange is formed to a regular geometric configuration, viz, square, diamond, hexagon, etc., and several of the bulb collectors are fabricated into a curtain wall with these flanges in adjacent relationship. The space within the cover plate and reflector is pumped to a vacuum. The shank portion of the member is connected into an aperture of a manifold.

  • Patent number: 4048982
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a bulb-type solar energy collector device comprising a hollow glass body shaped with a parabolic interior surface that is coated with specular finish of a metal, e.g. silver, and includes an apex aperture and integral hollow yoke. A hollow glass, bulb-shaped absorber element is exteriorly coated with a wave length selective coating. The bulb-shaped element includes a tubular hollow stem dependent from the bulbar portion and fixed in the yoke of the glass body so that the central axis of the stem and bulbar end portion is along the focal axis of the parabolic reflecting surface. A cover plate is sealed over the enlarged end of the reflecting surface enclosing the interior mirror surface in a chamber which is evacuated to substantial vacuum, e.g. 10.sup.-4 torr or greater vacuum. A working media is circulated from a source in a manifold through the interior volume of the absorber element to remove the solar energy absorbed thereby as heat and the media is returned to the manifold.

  • Patent number: 3960136
Abstract: A system for the collection and utilization of solar energy. A manifold is mounted on the roof of a building with a major portion of the manifold being contained within the building. A plurality of double-walled, glass solar energy collector tubes are inserted into that part of the manifold which extends above the roof of the building. A gas, such as air, completely fills the manifold and collector tubes. The gas is circulated from the manifold to the ends of the collector tubes from whence it returns, having been heated during the movement. A heat exchanger mounted in the manifold has a working fluid, such as water, passing through it. The heated gas impinges on the heat exchanger, giving up much of its energy to the fluid passing through the heat exchanger. The working fluid is then used for space heating or cooling functions within the building.
