  • Publication number: 20140248683
Abstract: The present invention relates to novel hydrogenases isolated from novel hyperthermophilic strains belonging to Thermococcus spp., genes encoding the hydrogenases, and methods of producing hydrogen using strains having the genes. According to the hydrogen production methods of the invention, a large amount of hydrogen can be produced merely by culturing the strains in specific culture conditions. Thus, the methods of the invention have advantages in that they are more economic and efficient than existing hydrogen production methods and can produce hydrogen even at high temperature.

  • Patent number: 8817884
Abstract: In a video encoder, pixel values of a macro-block are processed to determine an activity measure indicative of the type of content in the macro-block. Several techniques are employed for determining the activity measure of a macro-block. In an embodiment, a default quantization scale for quantizing a macro-block is modified based on the activity measure of the macro-block. In another embodiment, the macro-block is classified into one of multiple classes based on its activity measure. The default quantization scale for quantizing the macro-block is modified based on the classification of the macro-block. In yet another embodiment, an encoding mode to be used for encoding a macro-block is also determined on the basis of the class of the macro-block. Several of the techniques exploit the fact that the human visual system (HVS) has different sensitivities in perceiving a (rendered) macro-block or video frame, depending on the type of macro-block content.

  • Patent number: 8722110
Abstract: Disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition for the prophylaxis and therapy of inflammatory diseases, allergic diseases, or asthma, comprising a velvet apple (Diospyros blancoi A. DC.) extract as an active ingredient. Having the inhibitory activity against the nuclear translocation of NF-?B, whose level is rapidly elevated in response to inflammatory stimuli, the velvet apple extract can suppress the production of NO and PGE2, the expression of iNOS and COX-2, and the release of IL-1? and TNF-?, and can significantly down regulate Th2-mediated IL-4 and IL-13 production. In addition, the extract was found to inhibit the activation of eosinophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and to suppress the secretion of immunoglobulins and chemokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and blood, as measured by in vivo tests on an ovalbumin-induced asthma mouse model. Therefore, the extract can be used in the method for preventing or treating various inflammatory disorders, allergic diseases, or asthma.
