    Abstract: A separator for an electrochemical device, including: a porous polymer substrate; and a porous coating layer formed on at least one surface of the porous polymer substrate and containing a plurality of microcapsules and a binder polymer positioned on the whole or a part of the surface of the microcapsules to connect and fix the microcapsules with one another, wherein the microcapsules include metal hydroxide particles, and capsule coating layer surrounding each surface of the metal hydroxide particles. An electrochemical device including the separator, and the microcapsules are also provided. The microcapsules and separator show excellent flame resistance and can reduce degradation of battery performance caused by water adsorbability of the plurality of a metal hydroxide particle.

    Abstract: A separator for a lithium secondary battery, a method for manufacturing the same, and a lithium secondary battery including the separator, where the separator includes a porous polymer substrate having a plurality of pores, and a porous coating layer on at least one surface of the porous polymer substrate. The porous coating layer includes a plurality of inorganic particles and a binder polymer. The binder polymer includes a thermosetting phenolic resin having at least one hydroxyl group and at least one aromatic group. When the separator is exposed to high temperature, due to ignition or the like, the thermosetting phenolic resin in the porous coating layer is thermally cured to form a network structure by virtue of the structural characteristics of the separator. As a result, the separator has improved heat resistance as compared to the conventional separators and shows high adhesion to an electrode.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for manufacturing a separator including a heat resistant layer containing a ceramic material. The ceramic material is derived from a ceramic precursor. The method for manufacturing a separator has high convenience of processing, since the ceramic precursor can be converted into an inorganic material at a temperature lower than the melting point of the binder. In addition, the separator obtained by the method includes a heat resistant layer in which inorganic particles are not localized, locally distributed or agglomerated, and the ceramic material converted from the ceramic precursor is distributed homogeneously throughout the whole heat resistant layer. Further, there is no limitation in thickness of the heat resistant layer resulting from the particle size of the inorganic particles, and thus it is possible to form the heat resistant layer in the form of a thin film with ease.
